Racism plays a key role in migrants’ exclusion and violations of rights in the European Union
Brussels, 2 May 2017 – Anti-migrant political discourses and exclusionary migration policies are having a disproportionate impact on racialised migrants, according to a new report by the European Network Against Racism, covering 26 EU countries. Migrants are increasingly the targets of racist violence and speech; and face discriminatory policies and attitudes hindering their access to the labour market.

id you ever see a slightly drunk man trying that trick with the tablecloth? He thinks he can whip the cloth off the table with a fast, clean snap, but leave all the crockery perfectly intact. He gives a sharp tug and stands back with a triumphant flourish as the plates and glasses come flying to the ground and shatter all around him.
That’s what Brexit is like. Those who have driven it have successfully pulled the cloth off the table – the underlying fabric of modern Britain has been whipped away with a shocking suddenness.
They stand in triumph, sure that they have pulled off the trick of removing a whole layer of political reality without disturbing all the family tableware. They have yet to notice that so much that was on the table is now at their feet, broken, perhaps irreparably.

Selfishness on refugees has brought EU ‘to its knees’
▻https://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/selfishness-on-refugees-has-brought-eu-to-its-knees-1.2477702
The “ruinously selfish” behaviour of some member states towards refugees has brought the European Union to its knees, former attorney general Peter Sutherland has said.
In a sharp denunciation of Europe’s failures on migration and social integration, Mr Sutherland, who is special representative to the United Nations secretary general for migration, said political “paralysis and ambivalence” was threatening the future of the EU and resulting in the rise of xenophobic and racist parties.
With a population of 508 million, the EU should have had no insuperable problem welcoming even a million refugees “had the political leadership of the member states wanted to do so and had the effort been properly organised,” Mr Sutherland said. “But instead, ruinously selfish behaviour by some member states has brought the EU to its knees.”

It has been done using a map, but not in a way that resembles any country we know. Instead this map of the Irish State is made up of parts of countries and islands around the world – including some choice selections, such as the Cayman Islands to represent AIB.

▻http://www.middleeasteye.net/fr/opinions/la-guerre-contre-l-tat-islamique-un-nouvel-pisode-de-guerre-froide-17

gagner quelques mois supplémentaires. » (12.06.2015) +++

The Irish Times - Irlande.
Or toutes les parties
confiance nécessaire à un accord. » (12.06.2015) +++

d’austérité mis en œuvre par le gouvernement précédent ;
chose à ce climat négatif ? » (12.06.2015) +++

Marriage referendum: In the name of equality
▻http://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/editorial/marriage-referendum-in-the-name-of-equality-1.2218506
On Friday when we vote on amending the Constitution to recognise same-sex marriage, this State will, we hope, take an important, modernising step to shake off a legal conservatism that our people have already put long behind them. We are no longer that country.
We will not, as some suggest, redefine marriage – those of a religious persuasion will continue to define it as they wish, the sociologists and anthropologists will keep their own definition. We will vote only to change the legal definition of marriage to extend protection and support to a new class of people who wish to commit themselves to a permanent loving union. Firstly in the name of equality: “I’m not sure it’s necessary to get into sexual orientation . . .” Chief Justice John Roberts argued in the ongoing US Supreme Court review of the issue. “I mean, if Sue loves Joe and Tom loves Joe, Sue can marry him and Tom can’t. And the difference is based upon their different sex. Why isn’t that a straightforward question of sexual discrimination?” It is.
‘Black Tulip’ retrieves the fallen from Ukraine’s battlefields
▻http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/europe/black-tulip-retrieves-the-fallen-from-ukraine-s-battlefields-1.2180062
Slyusar is one of about 30 volunteers who regularly cross into separatist-held territory to find and retrieve the bodies of Ukrainian troops killed in fighting with the Russian-backed militants. They call their organisation “Black Tulip”, which was the nickname of a Soviet plane that brought the Red Army’s dead home from Afghanistan in the 1980s.
Their work is always sensitive, sometimes dangerous and often horrific, but Slyusar describes it as a patriotic duty to Ukraine’s servicemen and their relatives.
(…)
Based in a small town about 40km from the frontline, Black Tulip can be called into action at any hour, whenever the separatists give them clearance and security guarantees to work in a certain area.
“The militants didn’t want Ukrainian soldiers doing this task, so as civilians we stepped in to help,” says Slyusar.
“We have to watch for unexploded ordnance and mines, and sometimes it’s tense with the militants, but we’ve found a way to work.”
Black Tulip returns soldiers’ remains to government-held territory and then passes them to the Ukrainian military, which conducts DNA identification and contacts relatives of the deceased.
Donations
The group receives no government funding, and relies on donations to feed and equip its members and to maintain three ageing vans marked “Gruz 200” – “Cargo 200” – military code across the former Soviet Union for soldiers killed in action.
Black Tulip is one of countless volunteer organisations that have sprung up in Ukraine, since last year’s revolution, to perform vital services that are neglected by a crisis-ridden and near-bankrupt state.

Ukraine announced passport controls around pro-Russian separatist territories Thursday, as heavy artillery fire erupted in rebel-held Donetsk and Russia accused its neighbour of “crudely” violating the ceasefire.
Ukraine’s border guards service said anyone crossing in or out of rebel areas will now have to present a passport. Foreigners will “be sent to filtration points to determine the purpose of their visit” and will have “to show a passport or the required visa,” a statement said.

Ukraine PM says rebel-led regions will never receive funds from Kiev | Reuters
►http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/11/05/us-ukraine-crisis-yatseniuk-idUSKBN0IP17F20141105
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said on Wednesday Kiev would never provide any funding to rebel-controlled areas in the east because the government refused “to finance terrorists.”
He spoke as the peace deal between the two sides appeared to fray further.
Both Ukraine and separatist leaders accuse the other side of violating the Sept. 5 agreements, signed in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, that called a ceasefire and provided for Kiev to grant “special status” to the conflict-hit eastern regions.
While rebel authorities desire total autonomy, the regions have yet to sort out their finances, leaving pensioners without funds and social benefits unpaid.
Kiev will continue to supply gas and electricity to separatist regions, but “so long as the territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions are controlled by imposters, the central budget will not send funding there,” Yatseniuk said in a government meeting.
Ukraine refers to the rebels as terrorists.
Yatseniuk said the government would ordinarily have paid around 34 billion hryvnia ($2.5 billion) into the local budgets of Donetsk and Luhansk regions in 2014, but these funds would be disbursed only once Ukraine regained control of the territories.
