The phone rings in Arne Rinnan’s home, and the voice that answers it is like a quiet echo from a time long past.

Arne Rinnan’s calm, measured responses to the media in the aftermath of the Tampa affair became, in a sense, the wallpaper of the whole saga. And now, the voice is unchanged, only perhaps even a little more resistant to being pulled backinto the limelight than it already was then.

But after several minutes, the Tampa captain allows himself to reflect just a little.

This is what a refugee wrote to him: “Last night, our family prayed for you together, you old sailor from Norway, our rescuer. We remember those fatal hours, when our little wooden boat was shivering in the wind. You are a noble Viking with wisdom and humanity. My youngest son wants to put up a picture of you in his room, and my wife kisses your hands in gratitude".

Les Rohingyas, qui cumulent toutes sortes de misères, n’ont le droit qu‘à peu d’intérêt international pour le moment. L’actualité concernant cette minorité musulmane, paria dans son propre pays d’adoption, la Birmanie, ne manque pas pourtant : ce jeudi, une nouvelle embarcation qui transporte au moins 300 Rohingyas, dont beaucoup de femmes et d’enfants, a été signalée à la dérive près des côtes de Thaïlande. The inquiry into children in immigration detention today heard claims of sexual abuse against children by staff on Nauru, Yahoo News reports.

Former Save the Children case worker Kirsty Diallo told the public hearing today that a 16-year-old boy had been sexually assaulted by a cleaner on the island country last year.

Oliver Laughland of The Guardian reported on those claims last month, saying at the time witness accounts had revealed that “a cleaner employed by the detention centre manager Transfield Services grabbed the genitals of an asylum seeker boy”.

The 153 Sri Lankan asylum seekers, at the centre of High Court case, are locked in windowless cabins on an Australian border protection ship.

The 153 asylum seekers aboard an Australian Customs ship somewhere in the Indian Ocean are being locked up in windowless cabins, their lawyers claim.

Their case, to be processed in Australia, returns to the High Court for a directions hearing in Melbourne on Friday.

They claim because their boat was intercepted 27 kilometres from Christmas Island they were within Australian waters.

The decision not to take them to Australia did not fall within the bounds of “legal reasonableness and it was otherwise disproportionate and therefore invalid”, their statement of claims says.

It goes on to say that mothers and children had been separated from their fathers and husbands on the Customs ship, and there was no freedom of movement.

Their phones and belongings have been confiscated apart from the clothes they were wearing.

Almost all the Sri Lankan asylum seekers are unable to communicate in English and none of them have been asked why they left Sri Lanka.

Their lawyers argue their clients should not be returned to Sri Lanka or transferred to offshore immigration detention centres on Nauru or Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.

That’s because Nauru and PNG are not signatories to international law principles of non-refoulement, which forbids victims of persecution being returned to their persecutors.

The lawyers are demanding “procedural fairness” and an acknowledgement that border protection authorities acted unlawfully.

Last week the asylum seekers won a temporary reprieve that barred their return to Sri Lanka.

A day later the federal government gave an undertaking to give three days notice before moving the group.

Toleration or trust?: Investigating the acceptance of ’boat people’ among young Australians

Abstract: There has been intense debate in Australia regarding how asylum seekers who arrive by boat should be treated. Some call for compassion towards those prepared to risk their lives to seek protection, whereas others believe ’boat people’ should not be allowed into the country. This article uses data from a large representative sample of young people in Queensland, Australia, to understand the acceptance of asylum seekers by young people in Australia. The findings suggest that young Australians are more accepting than the Australian adult population. Several social and political background factors were also found to be associated with the belief that ’boat people’ should be permitted into Australia. Fewer factors, however, are associated with the trust young Australians have in people from another country. This suggests that while some young Australians may believe boats carrying asylum seekers should not be turned away, fewer might be prepared to enter into trusting relationships with ’boat people’ should they resettle in Australia.
