"The Kansas city metropolitan area was the perfect spot for Google Fiber’s rollout because of a bureaucratic quirk. “Kansas city owns a lot of the infrastructure needed to build out the fiber network”, explains Rory Maher, senior Internet analyst at CapStone Investments, but that’s not the the norm. In the portion of the metro area located in the state of Kansas, for example, the majority of power poles are controlled by the Board of Public Utilities rather than a multitude of private companies. As a result, Google had an easy time negotiating for the right to string wireds across those poles – and reportedly got a sweetheart deal, to boot, paying nearly 50 percent less per pole than its competitors.
The poles in your town are probably owned by more avaricious players, with whom Google can’t be bothered to play hardball. Your best hope is that Congress someday compels private utilities to share their infrastructure with all comers. Since that could take a millenium or two, here’s a stopgap idea : Spend your next vacation at a time-share in lovely Kansas City, spare hard drive in tow.

Google on Wednesday revealed ambitious plans to compete more directly with the US cable TV and telecoms industries as it said it wanted to build high-speed fibre optic networks in nine new US metropolitan areas covering 34 cities.
