Popular and Free, SoundCloud Is Now Ready for Ads - NYTimes.com

The first advertisers include Red Bull, Jaguar and Comedy Central, whose ads will run only in conjunction with licensed content. Among the initial content partners are two major music publishers, Sony/ATV and BMG; the distributors INgrooves and Seed; the comedy site Funny or Die; and a number of independent artists, including the Washington rapper GoldLink.
“GoldLink and his fan base have been built from the ground up on SoundCloud,” said Matt Colwell, one of GoldLink’s managers. “Now, with it progressing to monetization, it’s the natural next step for us.”
Despite months of negotiations, the three major record companies — Universal, Sony and Warner — have not completed licensing deals. People briefed on those talks say that in some ways the vibrancy of SoundCloud’s platform is part of the problem: There are so many D.J. mixes, mash-ups and other hybrid works, shared and remixed so frequently, that appropriate licensing terms have not yet been fully worked out. After all, how do you split the money from a three-minute dubstep mash-up of Britney Spears, Eurythmics, Beethoven and a dozen others?

Est-ce incompatible ?
Mount Hermon ski resort - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
▻http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Hermon_ski_resort
The Mount Hermon ski resort is situated on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Hermon, a few kilometers off the Israeli-Syrian ceasefire line, in the Israeli-occupied portion of the Golan Heights. The site is surrounded by the Hermon nature reserve. While the nature reserve is open year-round, the ski resort is open only at the peak of winter (usually January–March), when enough snow is accumulated on its ground.

NY Times refers to Shebaa Farms, an occupied area, as “disputed zone”

So does Al Jazeera:

Al-arabiya
▻http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/01/28/Israel-crossed-Iran-s-red-lines-after-Golan-attack.html
The specter of a full-blown war between Israel and Hezbollah escalated on Wednesday after the Lebanese militia fired a missile at an Israeli army vehicle along the frontiers, killing two and wounding seven Israeli soldiers.
(...)
An earlier tweet said: “Several injured in attack near Mt. Dov. We hold Hezbollah responsible for the attacks in northern Israel today.”
Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV said nine Israeli vehicles were damaged in the attack on the Shebaa farms frontier area. The militant group said it will release a statement on the attacks soon.

Wednesday’s attack took place in the Shebaa Farms, an area known as Mount Dov in Israel. Lebanon considers it occupied by Israel, and Syria also claims it. Israel captured the area, along with the adjacent Golan Heights, in the 1967 war and later annexed both regions
British Prime Minister Suggests Banning Some Online Messaging Apps - NYTimes.com

Popular messaging services like Snapchat and WhatsApp are in the cross hairs in Britain.
That was the message delivered on Monday by Prime Minister David Cameron, who said he would pursue banning encrypted messaging services if Britain’s intelligence services were not given access to the communications.
“Are we going to allow a means of communications which it simply isn’t possible to read?” Mr. Cameron said at an event on Monday, in reference to services like WhatsApp, Snapchat and other encrypted online applications. “My answer to that question is: ‘No, we must not.’ ”
Hidden Oppression in Eritrea - NYTimes.com
▻http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/10/04/opinion/hidden-oppression-in-eritrea.html?smid=fb-share&_r=2&referrer=
In Europe’s debate about how to deal with the flow of desperate migrants from Africa, there is an important element missing: the crisis in Eritrea. Every month almost 4,000 Eritreans flee to escape oppression, according to a United Nations special rapporteur.
A visit to Asmara, the Eritrean capital, is revealing. In the cafes you won’t hear people talking about the government of President Isaias Afewerki, and in the streets you will never see a march or a demonstration. Any sign of protest is quickly crushed, and opponents of the government face immediate imprisonment and torture, often in underground jails in remote areas. There they are stuffed into metal containers where the heat is unbearable, and given little food or water. The right to trial does not exist, and those convicted have no recourse to appeal.
A #Ferguson Story on ‘Conflicting Accounts’ Seems to Say ‘Trust Us’ - NYTimes.com
▻http://mobile.nytimes.com/blogs/publiceditor/2014/08/21/a-ferguson-story-on-conflicting-accounts-seems-to-say-trust-us
The story’s first paragraph says that “witnesses have given investigators sharply conflicting accounts of the killing.”
But where is the backup for the “#he_said_she_said” that readers are so tired of ? What’s the sourcing? It comes in the fifth paragraph — the basis for much of the story and one that’s so hard to grasp that I had to read it twice to understand what it was saying.
It goes like this:
“ The accounts of what witnesses have told local and federal law enforcement authorities come from some of those witnesses themselves, law enforcement authorities and others in Ferguson .”
Once you’ve absorbed that — the basis of the “sharply conflicting accounts” — you might ask: “And from whom, exactly, has The Times learned of these accounts?” Here’s the answer, which immediately followed in the article:
“ Many spoke on the condition of anonymity because they did not want to be identified discussing a continuing investigation. ”
The implicit answer is “trust us.”
The story goes on to quote, by name, two eyewitnesses who say that Mr. Brown had his hands up as he was fired on. As for those who posit that Mr. Brown was advancing on the officer who was afraid the teenager was going to attack him, the primary source on this seems to be what Officer Wilson told his colleagues on the police force. The Times follows this with an unattributed statement: “Some witnesses have backed up that account.” But we never learn any more than that.
Hit the Reset Button in Your Brain

Every status update you read on Facebook, every tweet or text message you get from a friend, is competing for resources in your brain with important things like whether to put your savings in stocks or bonds, where you left your passport or how best to reconcile with a close friend you just had an argument with. If you want to be more productive and creative, and to have more energy, the science dictates that you should partition your day into project periods. Your social networking should be done during a designated time, not as constant interruptions to your day.
Qu’est-ce que, d’après le #New_York_Times, « une nuit relativement calme » à #Gaza ?
The developments followed a relatively quiet night, in which the Israeli military bombed 25 sites in Gaza, killing five Palestinians in the southern cities of Rafah and Khan Younis,

Neymar’s Injury Sidelines Effort to End World Cup Racism ▻http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/07/08/world/americas/neymars-injury-sidelines-effort-to-end-world-cup-racism.html?_r=1&re
After an episode in Peru earlier this year in which Peruvian soccer fans subjected a Brazilian player to racial abuse by imitating the sounds of monkeys, President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil swiftly pledged a “World Cup against racism,” declaring, “Sports should be no place for prejudice.”
Yet when Brazil’s top player, Neymar, broke a vertebra when he was kneed in the back during a match on Friday by a Colombian player, the torrent of racist insults against the Colombian, Juan Camilo Zúñiga, showed how far the host of the World Cup remains from achieving that goal.
