Sounds that have disappeared
The whirring of old computers, the sound of TV white noise (before 24-hour TV), rotary dial telephones, old video game sounds, cash registers, dial-up modems, are all sounds that have virtually disappeared - yet only a few years ago they provided us with the sonic backdrop to our lives.
As technology evolves and we lose certain buzzes, beeps and whirrs, other noises are born which take their place.
We’re highly unlikely to hear the staccato click of a typewriter these days, for instance. That sound has been replaced by the more gentle tap of fingers on a laptop keyboard.
How long will it be before the sound of keys, petrol and diesel engines, books and numerous other everyday noises are also gone forever?
Nature’s sounds
As we lose forests and other natural habitats, many species in the animal, bird, and insect kingdoms are becoming extinct, along with the unique sounds they emit.
Sadly, many of these are irreplaceable, but the good news is that there are several institutions dedicated to recording as many of them as possible before they become extinct.

Millions of pounds of British aid money have been spent trying to bring security to Syria and to protect the UK from terrorism. But whistleblowers say our development efforts have been undermined by mismanagement, waste and corruption.
Using hundreds of leaked documents, reporter Jane Corbin pieces together the shocking truth about one of the government’s flagship foreign aid projects. She discovers how some of the cash has ended up in the hands of extremists and how an organisation we are funding has been involved in executions and torture.

Government suspends support for foreign aid project in Syria over claims cash is being diverted to extremists
▻http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/12/04/government-suspends-support-foreign-aid-project-syria-claims
British foreign aid money has been used fund a police force whose officers stood by and watched a woman get stoned to death and handed cash to extremists, it has been alleged as the Government suspends the project.
The Free Syrian Police (FSP), a flagship UK-backed scheme, is said to have had officers handpicked by a branch of #al-Qaeda and handed over cash in a protection racket to Nour al-Din al-Zinki, the extremist group in control of the Allepo.
Dead or fictitious officers have also been discovered on the payroll of the force, which was intended to bring law and order to parts of the country that were controlled by opponents of the Assad regime.
Following the claims by BBC Panorama to be aired this evening (MON) the government suspended all aid to the £12m project, which was first set up five years ago.

Building for a new life
Mark Breeze asks why architects haven’t done more to design shelter for refugees. An architect himself, he tells us that his training was aimed at helping him come up with solutions to the toughest problems, yet none is tougher than finding a balance between impermanence, sustainability and low cost in homes for refugees. After visiting the so-called ’Jungle’ camp in Calais and witnessing conditions there, Mark explains how he hopes to find a better framework for architects like him to help.

These Beautiful Maps Reveal the Secret Lives of Animals
►http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/11/where-animals-go-tracking-maps
Geographer James Cheshire and designer Oliver Uberti (formerly of National Geographic) have dipped into this deluge of data to create 50 beautiful and engaging maps that reveal the wanderings of animals captured by satellites, camera traps, drones, and other tools. The result is their latest book, Where the Animals Go.
The authors spoke to scores of scientists. Although a few researchers weren’t willing to share data they’d spent years or even decades collecting, many more were happy to help. Some of them are already posting their findings publicly on sites like Movebank and zoaTrack.

Is Islamic State finished?
So-called Islamic State is on the run. Caught in a pincer movement in Syria and Iraq, the group has lost large swathes of territory over the past year. With its revenues and numbers of fighters also dwindling, the demise of the caliphate appears all but unavoidable. And yet many caution against writing them off too soon, pointing to the group’s proven ability to change tactics. Already, they have redirected their efforts to launching terrorist operations around the world. And their ideology is still proving an effective recruiting sergeant.

Would A New International Convention Help Refugees?
The 1951 UN Refugee Convention was forged at a time when the world was recovering from a global war which had displaced vast numbers of people. Sixty-five years on, it is still the benchmark for refugee rights. But as the world grapples with a new refugee crisis, many think it’s no longer up to the job. So – our question this week – would a new international convention help refugees?

Crash du #MH17 : un député néerlandais accuse Kiev
▻https://fr.sputniknews.com/international/201602121021709030-crash-boeing-depute-accusations-missile

Who Shot Down MH17?
The Conspiracy Files
When Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 passengers and crew, a storm of conspiracy theories was unleashed across social media. While the official inquiries have pointed the finger of blame at separatist fighters and their Russian backers, a host of different theories claim the Ukrainian government, and even the CIA, were to blame.
With revealing eyewitness testimonies, satellite photographs, wire taps, clandestine videos and expert evidence, Conspiracy Files tries to sort the fact from the fiction. In a world where the information war fought online can be just as significant as battles on the ground, this film also analyses the role of the Kremlin in the search for the truth about who shot down MH17.
