Perverse Law in 9 States Enriches Donors to Private Schools: Trump Could Be on the Verge of Taking It National
A GOP-sponsored bill finds more ways to starve traditional public schools.

The Trump administration’s push to privatize public education not only seeks to deprive traditional K-12 schools of billions in federal aid, but may greatly expand existing tax loopholes that already allow wealthy people and firms to make money on donating to private schools.

The proposed Education Opportunities Act would “put two new federal voucher tax shelters within reach for many more Americans and lead to an explosion in funding for private schools,” a joint release from the School Superintendents Association (ASSA) and Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) said. “It would also keep in place an existing federal loophole that permits savvy taxpayers to benefit from certain ‘double-dipping’ practices, where they receive a federal deduction and state tax credit on the same donation to a private school.”

  • High School Bans Dangerous Threat to Male Students : Yoga Pants | Alternet

They are usually wearing the clothes that many successful adults wear to work.

Aside from the obvious curtailing of personal expression and potential violation of federal law, these dress codes also reinforce dangerous stereotypes to the detriment of students. Dictating that young women change their appearance because they are “distracting” men inherently objectifies them, and it teaches girls to be ashamed of their bodies. Moreover, it sends the wrong message to boys: It tells them that they cannot control themselves or their desires; what’s worse, it also tells them that their inability to respect others is acceptable. No, not just acceptable — it’s worthy of protection. These dress codes pose women’s bodies as a threat to the innocent young men who might be tempted to, oh, I don’t know, sexually harass or assault them, because that’s what happens when men see female derrieres enveloped in jersey knit cotton. But hey, the girls are asking for it in those yoga pants, right?

  • Investing in Education Creates More Than Twice as Many Jobs as Military Spending | Alternet

    #ROBERT_POLLIN :

... what we’re still seeing in the U.S., as you mentioned: we’re still seeing cuts in public education. Now, this is bad on its own terms. Public education is a foundation of any democratic society. And it’s also bad in terms of jobs. Spending on education is one of the best ways to create jobs, and it’s maybe the best way insofar as we already have an infrastructure in place called the system of public education at the state level, at the level local level. And when you spend $1 million on education, you’re going to create 27 jobs. Compare that with spending on the military. You spend $1 million in the military, you create 11 jobs. So you create two and a half times more jobs per dollar of expenditure by investing in education. And the most extensive system of education we have, obviously, is public education, to say nothing of the good it does for the community and for young people to have a decent public school in the community.

So we must reverse this thinking that somehow public education is a drag on economic well-being, that they need austerity in public education. Quite the opposite. Even on strictly economic terms, on job creation terms, invest in education, invest in public education. It’s the single best route to creating jobs right now.
