    Recruitment into the ranks of armed groups is common, mostly for youth who face dim employment prospects as they bounce from city to city. Professionals are also not immune. Criminal gangs in Mexico are kidnapping engineers and computer scientists to help them build their sophisticated communications systems that sometimes surpass the government’s.

    By virtually every metric, a humanitarian catastrophe is spreading across Mexico and Central America. The implications of this violence epidemic are frequently ignored by governments across the region. Aid agencies have also been slow to respond, with just a handful of groups like the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) sounding alarm bells.

      Ultimately, the protection of civilians requires addressing structural challenges in Central America, including reforms in the judicial and security sectors. Donors have tended to shy away from the most sensitive topics, which are unfortunately the same ones at the root of the problem. Afraid of damaging diplomatic ties, they often fail to push hard enough for the requisite banking, judicial and campaign reforms that could shut down serious gangs for good. Until this happens, the region’s wars will continue unabated.

L’ATF [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives] est entravé dans ses efforts pour arrêter ce flux.       Pour le membre de la Commission Politique du FNRP (le Front national de Résistance Populaire), Carlos H. Reyes, le coup d’État a non seulement permis de poursuivre un objectif de développement du modèle néolibéral et de remettre le contrôle de l’État aux mains des groupes oligarchiques, mais il a essayé de freiner les réformes mises en places avec l’appui des forces sociales du pays.

      “Tout cela a généré un grand recul qui s’est accentué avec l’approbation de lois qui sont venues piétiner les droits des ouvriers, des paysans et des secteurs populaires en général. Ils ont profité de la conjoncture pour continuer à mettre en concessions nos ressources naturelles, pour étendre les bénéfices des grandes entreprise multinationales et pour privatiser les services publics”, déclare Reyes dans un entretien à Opera Mundi.

      Pour Eugenio Sosa, annaliste politique hondurien, “face à la population les institutions sont érodées et délégitimisées par leur incapacité à faire face aux grandes problématiques qui touchent le pays. Les résultats sont dramatiques et la majorité des gens vivent dans un sentiment croissant d’insécurité et de désespoir”.

      En 2011, le Honduras a enregistré un taux annuel d’homicides de 86,5 pour 100 000 habitants, quatre fois plus que le taux d’homicides latino-américain et dix fois plus que le taux d’homicides mondial établi par l’OMS (l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé).

    This leaves one last possible explanation — those in power were angry and impulsively acted on that anger. They’re lashing out: sending a message and demonstrating that they’re not to be messed with — that the normal rules of polite conduct don’t apply to people who screw with them. That’s probably the scariest explanation of all. Both the U.S. and U.K. intelligence apparatuses have enormous money and power, and they have already demonstrated that they are willing to ignore their own laws. Once they start wielding that power unthinkingly, it could get really bad for everyone.

Des chercheurs ont offert des aides de 8 à 10$ par enfant et par mois dans certains quartiers pauvres de pays en #développement, sans condition. Contrairement à ce que l’on pouvait s’attendre, les gens l’ont utilisé pour envoyer leurs enfants à l’école. Pour les chercheurs, donner de l’argent sans aucune condition préalable était plus efficace que de demander aux familles de faire quelque chose en échange de leur générosité, comme (...)

    The thing that stuck with me most from stories on yesterday’s clashes in Egypt were the people attempting to flee the protest center as police beat them and snipers mowed them down.

    This is from Washington Post reporter Abigail Hauslohner’s personal account of her harrowing experience near the site of the violence:

    Police carried a wounded fellow officer past us. Another officer beat a teenager over the head with a handgun before hauling the youth away. A woman implored a police officer not to kill protesters as they shoved back a man who, through tears, said he was trying to get to his younger sister, who was trapped inside Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque.

    For the uninitiated, it can be hard to keep up with the significance of day-to-day developments in Egypt. Morsi’s fall was precipitated by protests that erupted regularly over the course of the year, and after his ouster, violence has only picked up. Egypt’s entire summer has been punctuated by protests, clashes, and crackdowns. The horror of yesterday’s massacre speaks for itself, but when a country is in the throes of such turbulence, it can be hard to get a sense of the scale of individual tragedies.

    But in fact, yesterday was one of the deadliest single-day instances of police-on-protester violence since the infamous Tiananmen Square incident in China in 1989.

    Using news reports, I pulled together the high and low estimates of deaths in major recent events in which police or security forces shot civilians. The dots represent the low death toll estimate, and the line shows the range leading up to the high estimate:❞

    Admire-moi cet empaquetage : tu cites en un paragraphe l’analyse politique d’As‘ad Abukhalil sur les ingérences étrangères au Liban, tu lui opposes un escroc salafiste aux trois quarts analphabète qui parle d’ingérences étrangères au Liban, là tu balances un prétendu responsable du Hezbollah qui te cite Mein Kampf, et hop, tu conclus que tout le monde au Liban souscrit à des « théories du complot ». Abukhalil, un arriéré salafiste et Mein Kampf, tout ça c’est du pareil au même…
