Rio Tinto va licencier prochainement jusqu’à 1 700 personnes dans sa mine de cuivre en Mongolie, sur fond de mésentente entre le géant minier anglo-australien et le gouvernement d’Oulan Bator, a annoncé l’entreprise, jeudi 15 août. Oyu Tolgoi, « la colline turquoise », est située dans le sud du désert de Gobi, qui recèle un des gisements de métal rouge les plus vastes du monde. La production a démarré cet été, et le gouvernement réclame l’examen du financement du site devant le Parlement.

Les premiers acheminements extraits de la mine étaient initialement attendus dès juin mais ont été retardés pour cause de mésentente entre Rio Tinto et le gouvernement, notamment sur les conditions de rapatriement des bénéfices.

Yesterday [ie 13/07/13], Oyu Tolgoi launched the export of its copper concentrate and sent its first ever shift of 40,000 tons of copper concentrate. Oyu Tolgoi, the third biggest copper deposit in the world, now enters circulation in the marketplace. The export launch is a very big step for both Oyu Tolgoi and Mongolia for creating a secure and sustainable mining sector.

A line of 16 trucks with loads of 576 tons of copper concentrate each, set off to Gashuun Sukhait port. The first shift of copper concentrate is 5,800 tons and the remaining product will be delivered after the observance of Naadam [fête nationale].

The Mongolian government and Oyu Tolgoi stakeholder, Rio Tinto, Turquoise Hill Resources and Oyu Tolgoi LLC still remain in dispute about the alleged two billion USD budget overshooting, additional investment and other matters. The government has assigned a task force to audit the company’s reports, with the audits set to be discussed by parliament.
