Car Bomb in the Southern Suburbs of Beirut | As‘ad AbuKhalil

It is clear what Saudi Arabia and its agents in the region want: They have been striving for several years for an all-out sectarian Sunni-Shia war. They have tried all methods to drag Hezbollah into a sectarian regional confrontation. Hezbollah remains reluctant – although its mass base feels provoked and agitated – because it knows that Saudi Arabia wants a sectarian war in order to divert attention from Israel. And it is tempting for Saudi Arabia to drag Hezbollah into a sectarian confrontation because it remains a sectarian party (in ideology and composition) despite its care in avoiding sectarian discourse.
But the bomb thus far failed in dragging all of Lebanon into sectarian wars. The plot began in Tripoli and then moved to Saida, before it exploded in the southern suburbs. The Saudi-Qatari plot is unrelenting and is clearly being undertaken on behalf of Israeli interest. Nasrallah was not bluffing when he said that things may get out of hand: His ability to restrain and control the Shia community may not last long. And the Amal movement can easily benefit if things get out of hand. Saudi Arabia may after all get what it has wished for all along.
