1. You’re So Vain (1972)
If Carly Simon had never written anything other than You’re So Vain, she would still be famous. It has spawned nearly 50 years of speculation over its subject, but no one would have been interested in who it was about if it wasn’t such an incredible song. Everything is perfect – the atmospheric, attention-grabbing intro; its balance of wordy intelligence and pop smarts; Paul Buckmaster’s superb string arrangement; the flatly brilliant conceit of the chorus; the cocktail of waspishness and affection in the lyrics, which leave you simultaneously horrified by its subject’s smug, philandering bullshit and weirdly impressed despite yourself.

Allen Toussaint est mort
▻http://entrelesoreilles.blogspot.fr/2015/11/elo208-marche-de-la-dignite-et-contre.html

Après avoir écrit pour les autres (il a publié sous son nom aussi, mais avec moins de succès) une floppée des meilleurs titres de la Nouvelle Orléans ("Ruler of My Heart," "Working in the Coal Mine," "Ride Your Pony," "Fortune Teller," "Southern Nights," "Get Out of My Life, Woman," "Sneaking Sally Through the Alley", "Mother-in-Law", "Who’s Gonna Help Brother Get Further ?", "From A Whisper To A Scream", "Yes We Can Can", “Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky (From Now On)”, "A Certain Girl," "Tain’t it the Truth," "Te-Ta-Te-Ta-Ta", "I Like it Like That," "All These Things," "Lipstick Traces", "It’s Raining", "Working in the Coal Mine", "Holy Cow"...), en avoir produit des tonnes (pour Irma Thomas, Aaron Neville, Art Neville, the Neville Brothers, Labelle, Dr. John, the Meters, The Wild Tchoupitoulas, Paul McCartney, Joe Cocker, Glen Campbell, Ernie K-Doe, Chris Kenner, Lee Dorsey, Jessie Hill, Benny Spellman, Al Hirt, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton...), avoir arrangé des lignes de cuivres historiques (pour The Band, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Hugh Laurie...), avoir découvert des musiciens fabuleux, l’ouragan Katrina l’avait chassé de sa ville.

Music as a torture weapon: exploring the dark side | Music | The Guardian
▻http://www.theguardian.com/music/tomserviceblog/2015/sep/30/bleak-history-music-as-torture-suzanne-cusick-morag-grant
The impetus for much of their research over the past few years was the revelation of the ways music was one of the tools used to degrade and destabilise prisoners in the war on terror in locations including Iraq and Guantanamo Bay. For example, playing music – often chosen to be as culturally offensive as possible to the cadre of detained prisoners – at devastatingly loud volume for long but unpredictable periods, meant that prisoners were deprived of control of sleep, but also of their ability to find an aural space that was not invaded by their captors.
Music at loud volumes goes into your bones and violates a prisoner’s inner being as well as their external environment. But this isn’t just a feature of the recent past: as Grant and Cusick’s research – and that of others – and the testimony of captors and prisoners makes clear, the use of music in conflict in general, and in torture in particular, has a long and grim history especially in totalitarian regimes throughout the 20th century, but also in many other contexts from the Middle Ages on.

Listening to ’extreme’ music makes you calmer, not angrier, according to study | Music | The Guardian
▻http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/jun/22/listening-heavy-metal-punk-extreme-music-makes-you-calmer-not-angrier-s
Heavy metal is more commonly associated with headbanging, satanism, moshpits and the decapitation of small mammals. According to a new study, however, metal, and all forms of “extreme” music, can positively influence the listener, inspiring calmness rather than anger.
A study by the University of Queensland, the Australian public research institution in Brisbane, revealed that rather than proving the hypothesis that “extreme music causes anger”, the theory that “extreme music matches and helps to process anger” was supported instead.
Focusing on #heavy_metal, #emo, #hardcore, #punk, #screamo and the various other subgenres featured in the category of “extreme” music, honours student Leah Sharman and Dr Genevieve Dingle studied 39 regular listeners of extreme music, between the ages of 18 and 34.
“We found the music regulated sadness and enhanced positive emotions,” Sharman said. “When experiencing anger, extreme-music fans liked to listen to music that could match their anger.”

Fifty years on, Grateful Dead tour breaks box-office records | Music | The Guardian
▻http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/may/16/grateful-dead-tour-breaks-box-office-records
As forerunners of the hippy-capitalist ethos, the band pioneered practices that prefigured social networking and the modern structure of the music business. The emphasis on creating a community of fans, wrote Deadhead management consultant Barry Barnes in Everything I Know About Business I Learned from The Grateful Dead, presaged the practices of Facebook, Google, Uber or Amazon that have shifted market power towards the customer.
As masters of “strategic improvisation” – the ability to plan, act and make adjustments in real time – Deadheads created an entire culture, complete with wardrobe, foods, ethics and rituals that existed beyond the sales of recorded music. Barnes believes the band was stunned that, even 20 years after Garcia’s death, demand could still be so strong.
Part of the issue for Deadheads, says David Meerman Scott, author of Real-Time Marketing & PR and Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead, is that tour promoters ignored the community organisation component of the Grateful Dead’s operation. In the past fans would have to apply for tickets through the band’s office, sending postal orders, but for this reunion thousands of tickets went on sale to Chicago Bears fans and were later touted by scalpers.
Whatever the mis-steps, the concerts prove the enduring power of the Deadhead tribe. “People wanted to see their friends. They recorded the shows and traded their tapes. The band controlled the tickets and set the prices that fans had to jump through hoops to acquire. Because they had that social network, when they announced they’d play again, everybody thought, ‘Hey, let’s get together and have a party’.”
Nigeria’s new president #Muhammadu_Buhari – the man who jailed Fela Kuti | Music | The Guardian
▻http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/apr/01/nigerias-new-president-muhammadu-buhari-is-the-man-who-put-fela-kuti-in
#Fela_Kuti would surely have been delighted at the first peaceful handover of power in Africa’s biggest democracy, but horrified by the return of Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s new president. Fela, Nigeria’s greatest and most influential musician, was a brave and outrageous political campaigner who spent much of his life furiously attacking his country’s successive military leaders. He was arrested 200 times by different regimes, but only kept in jail for a lengthy period of time by (then) Major-General Buhari, who first came to power in a military coup in December 1983.Fela was sentenced by a military tribunal to five years’ imprisonment on what he always insisted were trumped-up currency charges, but he was released after a year and a half, following another change of military regime.

From my part, I believe the very concept of exclusive intellectual property with respect to recorded music has come to a natural end, or something like an end. Technology has brought to a head a need to embrace the meaning of the word “release”, as in bird or fart. It is no longer possible to maintain control over digitised material and I don’t believe the public good is served by trying to.

Arctic Monkeys: from men of the people to tax-dodgers
▻http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2014/jul/11/arctic-monkeys-tax-avoidance-liberty
Rock stars have long held an ambivalent view towards paying their fair share of tax. But when the band in question pride themselves on having the common touch, it’s especially hard to stomach
Criticism should especially apply to the Arctic Monkeys – whose members have sheltered up to £1.1m in the Channel Islands – as they’ve long traded on their image as a band of the people, with Turner cast as a working-class hero, a snotty, sharp-minded northern kid in the mould of the young Lennon, cutting through the bullshit and telling it like it is. They could do with a reminder of just how much they owe to the state they’re so reluctant to fund. Singer Alex Turner may have ascended to the elite, dating models and living the high life, but taxation paid for the hospital where he was born, the school where he was educated and the schools which paid his (teacher) parents’ wages, the street lamps that lit his way home from rehearsals, and the benefits that sustained his bandmates when they were out of work.
Never mind the #swastikas: the secret history of the UK’s ’punky Jews’

Who put the Oy in Oi? Surprise is the default reaction, and sometimes even disapproval, when I mention the Jews in #Punk panel I am moderating for London’s Jewish Book Week. And no wonder. Punks and Jews really are a contradiction in terms. Orthodox Judaism means following a body of rules as closely as possible, whereas punk is the reverse.
