Mustafa Higazy, the strategic adviser to Egypt’s interim presidential authority, told the Daily Telegraph that Gen Abdul-Fattah al-Sisi, who orchestrated a purge of the Muslim Brotherhood-led government of Mohammed Morsi in July, had the qualities Egyptians wanted in a leader.
There has been increasing speculation that the 58 year-old army commander would emerge as the next leader of the country as it seeks to put the turmoil of the Arab Spring in the past. Popular campaigns have been started by both youth activists and nationalists to draft Gen Sisi into the civilian post of president. Officially however, Gen Sisi intends to remain in his armed forces post.
