Fort McMurray is the land of oil and money, according to one interactive documentary that lets viewers chose the fate of the oilsands epicenter.

After two years of research, 60 days of filming and 55 interviews, the creator of Fort McMoney is launching the online documentary game.

During four weeks, users will decide the virtual future of the city, while learning about the social economic, political and cultural history to understand what’s on the line.

“It was obvious to us from the first shoot that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper got it right when he said these oils sands were truly ‘an enterprise of epic proportions,’" says Creator David Dufrense. “That magnitude inspired us to create a wild narrative, blending the video game experience with the documentary approach. The landscape guided the choices we made in crafting this exploration of Fort McMurray that is on par with its development: boundless.”

Some of the region’s most familiar faces are featured in the project, including Mayor Melissa Blake and Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation Chief Allan Adam.

Dufrense also gives users an inside look at camp sites and community events and he doesn’t shy away from the seedier parts of the region.
