Le croiseur lance-missiles américain USS Cowpens a évité de justesse une collision avec un bâtiment de la marine chinoise le 5 décembre en mer de Chine méridionale, a révélé vendredi la Flotte américaine du Pacifique.
Le croiseur lance-missiles a été forcé de manœuvrer pour éviter d’entrer en collision avec le navire chinois qui lui avait coupé la route avant de s’arrêter, selon des officiers de marine et des responsables de la défense. Le navire chinois amphibie s’est approché à moins de 500 mètres du bateau américain, a indiqué un responsable du Pentagone sous couvert d’anonymat. L’USS Cowpens se trouvait « dans les environs » du nouveau porte-avions chinois, le #Liaoning, quand l’incident s’est produit, a par ailleurs noté le responsable.

Senkaku/Diaoyu, si on veut, surtout le b-a-ba de l’espionnage. C’est quand même un grand classique de toutes les marines : venir asticoter le fouineur… Le Liaoning est en cours d’essais et teste ses capacités d’emploi d’appareils embarqués. Ça intéresse pas mal de monde.

Though the United States will not acknowledge it openly, the Cowpens was in position to conduct surveillance on the Liaoning, which would be a sensitive matter for the Chinese.

It was not clear how far the Cowpens was sailing from the Chinese aircraft carrier. But because of sophisticated American radar, it did not have to be particularly close to observe it, naval experts said.

A US warship that was forced to maneuver to avoid a collision with a Chinese naval vessel had “posed a threat”, state-run media said Monday, December 16, after Washington accused China of being the aggressor.
The Global Times newspaper, which often takes a nationalistic stance, said the USS Cowpens guided missile cruiser had “come to China’s threshold and posed a threat to China’s military security”.

The Global Times quoted an anonymous Chinese military expert as saying the US “was tailing after and harassing” China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier which was conducting drills in the area, and that the USS Cowpens had come within 45 kilometers of the “inner defense layer of the Chinese fleet”.
“Bad guys always claim innocence first,” the source told the paper, adding that the US warship “took offensive actions at first towards the Liaoning formation on the day of the confrontation”.
