Polyethylene Glycol: The Amazing Liquid that Pours Itself [Video]
In this video, Youtuber “The Action Lab” showcases a really interesting high-molecular weight polymer that can self-siphon and pour itself our of a beaker. The reason it can do this is because it can be made to have a very high molecular weight. The solution in the video has a MW of 1,000,000 while water has only a MW of about 18. The solution he used had a MW of 1,000,000. The solution is basically like a molecular sized bowl of string or beads that pull each other out of the beaker once the initial pour has started. Polythylene Glycol is also used as a laxative. It is very slippery feeling like mucus and once it is on your hand it is tough to get off! [The Action Lab | Via (...)

Are We All Related? [Science Video]
In this episode of “It’s OK To Be Smart,” host Joe Hanson investigates how closely related we all really are. Basic math tells us that all humans share ancestors. But you’ll be amazed at how recently those shared ancestors lived. Thanks to genetic data in the 21st century, we’re even discovering that we really are all descended from one mother. Who Dies : You Decide in Self-Driving Car Survey
▻http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/geeksAreSexyTechnologyNews/~3/OO4gQJerFdo
MIT researchers want you to decide how self-driving cars should make moral decisions. It’s a modern – and potentially real – twist on a classic hypothetical ethics problem. The trolley problem, in its most simplest form, asks you to imagine you are driving a train and find you are about to hit five people who are on the track ahead. There’s no time to stop the train or for the people to get out of the way, but you could divert it onto another track where you spot one person in the way. The question is whether you divert and, at its simplest, the choice is between the more rational decision of minimizing the casualties by diverting and the more philosophical view that actively choosing to divert makes you responsible for killing the one person whereas staying on track means the five deaths (...)

Do you know what the differences between a front-end and backend developers are? And what about those project managers or IT support specialists? Do you know what they really do? This fantastic comic by Mart Virkus from toggl explains all of these quite well by illustrating each job through the rather mundane job of changing a broken lightbulb.

E-paper Screens Replace Bus Stop Info Sheets
▻http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/geeksAreSexyTechnologyNews/~3/omH7_bnhkS4
Public transport officials in London are experimenting with bus stop timetable signs using electronic paper. The idea is to blend the benefits of paper and electronic screens. Most bus stops in the city have printed paper displays for timetables and route information. That brings two main disadvantages. Firstly, the sheer hassle of printing new sheets and replacing all the displays is one of the reasons timetable changes are usually done only a few times a year. Secondly, the paper displays are no help if routes have to be delayed or temporarily suspended. One answer to this is to communicate directly with customers, whether that be through apps, websites, social media posts or a simple system of customers sending a text message with a code relating to the specific bus stop and (...)
Photomath: The App That Does Your Math For You
▻http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/geeksAreSexyTechnologyNews/~3/8pRPPhD1S-0
I look at the Photomath app, and I get very sad. Not that it will make future generations stupid or any such nonsense. No, I am mad that it didn’t exist while I struggled through algebra. That was essentially a semester I spent barely treading water, and knowing this would exist one day would’ve eased that struggle a bit. All you do is take a photo of the math problem and the app does all the work. A thing of true beauty. From TechCrunch: The app has accumulated 11 million downloads on iOS and Windows Phone, and people are still using it. In January alone, it was used to solve 8 million math problems. And now, it is available on Android. It is still free and should resonate well with high school kids who have a cheap Android phone. So it is exactly what you think it is, and if you are (...)
