#Detroit’s Immigration Solution
The governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder, wants to fix Detroit with smart immigrants.
He proposes to attract 50,000 of them over five years using a visa program for people with advanced degrees or exceptional abilities in the sciences, arts or business.
It’s an unusual plan, and appealing on a gut level: Mr. Snyder, a businessman, is proposing a high-intensity effort to help Detroit to repopulate and rebuild itself, not to just hunker down through bankruptcy proceedings and then stagger on as before. Combined with other efforts by city officials to stimulate education, the arts, technology and manufacturing, a jolt of immigrant energy could help resuscitate a city that many have given up for dead.
