“From its very conception, “True Detective” has subverted expectations of the cop-and-murder mystery genre, as well as rituals of the television business. Typically, aspiring creators entice executives with a treatment outlining the basic story line and main characters and perhaps a written pilot. “True Detective” was pitched as a full-blown package. Two episodes were already written and the rest sketched out, the big-name movie stars were penciled in, and a movie director, Cary Fukunaga (“Jane Eyre,” Sin Nombre”), was on board to direct all of the season’s episodes, a rare feat among television dramas.
Unlike nearly every TV show, there would be no writers’ room; Mr. Pizzolatto, 38, would be composing every single word. And “True Detective” would be an anthology series, meaning a new plot and cast each season.”
