From sterilisation campaigns in the 1970s, to being barred from a restaurant in a big hotel just a few days ago: this is how politically correct Sweden treats the Roma. It’s a long history of discrimination that the Swedish government is acknowledging for the first time through a publication that details the abuse, the acts of racism and violence that have been used against gypsies in the Scandinavian country since the beginning of the 20th century to today. The research describes how prejudice against the Roma has been a constant in 20th century Swedish history and has even affected immigration policies. Even though its ‘ban’ on nomads was lifted in 1954, Stockholm has always sought to limit the presence of travellers, labelling them ‘socially handicapped‘. The sterilisation campaign, conducted between 1934 and 1974, was a supreme act of violation of rights. Last but not least, many representatives of the Roma community were invited to the presentation of the report, including Diana Nyman, who was given a room in a luxury hotel at the government’s expense. The day of the conference, Ms Nyman, who was dressed in traditional Roma clothing, was refused entry to the restaurant, forcing her to have breakfast in the lobby.
