An amateur photographer has captured rare and beautiful images of the first snowfall in the Sahara desert for nearly 40 years.
Karim Bouchetata photographed the fleeting scene on Monday in the small Algerian town of Ain Sefra, which lies in the Atlas Mountains on the northern edge of the desert.
In his images a thin layer of snow rests on deep orange dunes, where he said it stayed for about a day, and forms whirling patterns where the slopes are too steep for it to settle. Snow was reportedly last seen in Ain Sefra in 1979, when a half-hour snowstorm stopped traffic.

Kenya plans to close all of its refugee camps in a move that would displace more than 600,000 people.
The country’s government said it was shutting down the camps due to “very heavy” economic, security and environmental issues. Those due to close include Dadaab, the largest refugee camp in the world, home to more than 300,000 people on the Kenya-Somalia border.
Karanja Kibicho, Kenya’s secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, cited the influence of terror group Al-Shabaab as among the risks of keeping the camps open.

The top doctor treating patients infected with the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone has died from the disease, officials have confirmed.
Dr Sheik Umar Khan had been hospitalised in quarantine since he contracted the virus last week. The virologist was credited with treating more than 100 patients at the hospital in Kenema - one of the world’s leading Ebola diagnosis facilities.
Before his diagnosis, Dr Khan told reporters: “I am afraid for my life, I must say, because I cherish my life.”

While I highly doubt that what passes for land reform under Mugabe is anything but an exercise in cronyist corruption, the need for land reform itself is a persisting sore point that provides an anchor for discontent ever since the independence.
Foreign agrarian exploiters and their supporters may not like it but, even if Mugabe goes down, the need for land redistribution won’t go away and if Mugabe’s successor does not seriously tackle it, it will provide great fuel for its opponent who will then have popular sympathy on its side.

j’imagine que Khadafi lui aurait fait le même effet ; à un moment il faut regarder aussi les faits en face, pas seulement écouter les discours…
Il faut dire que face à des régimes d’apartheid, les états de la Frontline n’avaient pas de mal à faire bonne figure.... Même les plus ardents anticommunistes de la Guerre Froide étaient bien embarrassés d’être rangés du côté de l’Afrique du Sud et de la Rhodésie malgré tous leurs efforts pour faire semblant de ne pas les connaître.
Mais au-delà de ce cadre général, Mugabe a été une figure importante de l’époque des indépendances et il n’a pas démérité à la tête du ZANU et du ZANLA pendant la Chimurenga - j’ignore s’il préparait déjà l’écrasement des Ndebele et l’affirmation de son pouvoir personnel au détriment des projets de réforme sociale, mais rien ne le prouve. Sa dégénérescence a commencé après son accession au pouvoir - le pouvoir corrompt...
On dirait que l’article parle du Mugabe des années 50 et 60 - comme s’il ne s’était rien passé après...
J’ai par inadvertance effacé le premier commentaire de @fil qui disait « on a vu où a mené l’#instrumentalisation depuis 30 ans de la question » - et je découvre du même coût que les auteurs de l’article initial ont pouvoir de censure.

In what lawyers and activists say is a retrenchment of state brutality akin to the worst abuses of power during Hosni Mubarak’s regime, large numbers of children have been unlawfully imprisoned in camps used by Egypt’s central security forces.

The real culprit, researchers believe, is the shift to urban living. Cities in Africa are the fastest-growing in the world. This is not only about the spread of McDonald’s, KFC and the “Coca-Colanisation” of the developing world. It is also about the change in diet that occurs when people move from growing to buying their food.

The terrible price many Libyan people have paid to be free of Colonel Gaddafi is becoming plain. Yesterday, only a day after more than 120 decomposing bodies were found in a Tripoli hospital, a British television team filmed the charred remains of an estimated 53 people in a burnt-out warehouse in the south of the city.
Stuart Ramsay of Sky News was led to the building by residents who had made the discovery. Inside was a scene of mass cremation: more than four dozen corpses of what were once human beings, their ages and genders impossible to tell. Ribcages, skulls and other bones lay in a blackened mess. Local people told of how the bodies of perhaps as many as 100 others lay nearby, including those of two soldiers with their hands behind their backs who had been executed for refusing to fire on the victims of the massacre, be they regime critics, civilians, or other refusenik soldiers.

The “others” in question are the small groups of former special forces operatives, many with British accents, working for private security firms who have been seen regularly by reporters in the vanguard of the rebels’ haphazard journey from Benghazi towards Tripoli.
These small detachments of Caucasian males, equipped with sunglasses, 4x4 vehicles and locally acquired weaponry, do not welcome prying eyes, not least because their presence threatened to give credence to the Gaddafi regime’s claims that the rebel assault was being directed by Western fifth-columnists.
Amid frustration and even disdain in British and Allied circles about the ragtag nature of much of the Libyan rebel army – whose reputation as fair-weather fighters proved to be literal in April when two days of rainfall halted their offensive – London has been content for the Benghazi-based National Transitional Council to use funds to buy in ex-SAS men and others with a British military background to help train and advise anti-Gaddafi forces.
