    Microsoft has open-sourced a number of its developer tools and technologies in recent years. The company has released under various open source licenses the bulk of ASP.NET, MVC, Web API, Entity Framework, SignalR, VS Web Essentials, the Azure software development kit and more.

    Microsoft also made available today an end-user preview of the .NET Compiler Platform project, previously known as “Roslyn.” Roslyn includes the next versions of the C# and VB compilers, as well as a compiler-as-a-service programming interface. And on April 2, Microsoft execs also announced the company is open sourcing WinJS, its Windows library for JavaScript.

    Google offers free OSes to computer and phone makers as a way of driving the use of its search engine and countless other web services, and now, Microsoft is at least experimenting with the idea.

    On Tuesday, at its annual developer conference in San Francisco, the software giant unveiled a free version of its Windows operating system — a seismic shift in strategy that never would have happened under ex-boss Steve Ballmer — and a day later, the company made an even more remarkable move in open sourcing many of its software development tools and programming languages, freely sharing the underlying code with the world at large.

    The .NET Foundation is starting with 24 .NET open source projects under its stewardship, including the newly announced .NET Compiler Platform ("Roslyn") as well as the ASP.NET family of projects, both open sourced by Microsoft Open Technologies, Inc. (MS Open Tech). Xamarin contributed six open source .NET projects including the very popular Mailkit and Mimekit projects.
