… et la polémique sur les 37,5 kHz par seconde ne faiblit pas dans les commentaires du Monde.fr. Formulation un peu malheureuse, puisqu’il s’agit d’un signal d’une fréquence de 37,5 kHz, émis toutes les secondes .

Un « événement acoustique » que le navire australien Ocean Shield a annoncé avoir lui aussi intercepté, selon Angus Houston, responsable de l’agence australienne qui coordonne les opérations.

Un total de dix avions militaires, deux appareils civils et 13 navires devaient continuer de sillonner dimanche une vaste aire maritime de 216 000 km2, à environ 2 000 km à l’ouest de la ville australienne de Perth.

The Australian navy’s Ocean Shield, which is carrying high-tech sound detectors from the U.S. Navy, picked up two separate signals within a remote patch of the Indian Ocean far off the west Australian coast that search crews have been crisscrossing for weeks. The first signal lasted two hours and 20 minutes before it was lost. The ship then turned around and picked up a signal again — this time recording two distinct “pinger returns” that lasted 13 minutes, Houston said.

“Significantly, this would be consistent with transmissions from both the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder,” Houston said.

He said the position of the noise needs to be further refined, and then an underwater autonomous vehicle can be sent in to investigate.

Meanwhile, officials were trying to determine whether two separate sounds heard by a Chinese ship about 555 kilometers (345 miles) away from the Ocean Shield were related to the plane. The patrol vessel Haixun 01 first detected a brief “pulse signal” on Friday at 37.5 kilohertz — the same frequency used by the airliner’s black boxes. The ship detected a second signal on Saturday within 2 kilometers (1.4 miles) of the original signal, this one lasting for 90 seconds. Houston said China also reported seeing floating white objects in the area.

The crew of the Chinese ship reportedly picked up the signals using a sonar device called a hydrophone dangled over the side of a small boat — something experts said was technically possible but extremely unlikely. The equipment aboard the British and Australian ships is dragged slowly behind each vessel over long distances and is considered far more sophisticated.

La « découverte » des boîtes noires serait un trophée pour la Chine qui a dépêché plusieurs navires et avions sur la zone, une première aussi loin de ses bases. Une opération qui affirme les ambitions maritimes nouvelles du géant asiatique face à l’US Navy, appuyé par un budget militaire en hausse de 12,2 % en 2014. Derrière le mot d’ordre de solidarité internationale affichée, la chasse au Boeing est l’occasion pour les puissances militaires de l’Asie-Pacifique rivale de se jauger. « Aucune puissance ne veut dévoiler aux rivaux ses capacités les plus avancées », analyse James Shin, de l’Université Monash. Néanmoins, les autorités australiennes ont salué la qualité de la coopération offerte par Pékin. « La Chine partage tout ce qui est important pour les recherches », juge Houston.

The most recent finds came from a Chinese ship slowly moving through the southern Indian Ocean.
So what was it doing?
Video on Chinese state-run CCTV shot Saturday shows crew members from the Haixun 01 boarding a small yellow dinghy and using what appears to be a handheld hydrophone.
The three men on board lower the device into the water on a pole.
A CCTV correspondent aboard the Haixun 01 reported that the first 37.5 kh signal was detected for 90 seconds.
CNN spoke to the U.S. company that makes such devices.
Handheld pinger locating devices were first built for scuba use, said Justin E. Manley, senior director of business operations for Teledyne Benthos.
The equipment starts at a list price of about $8,000; with all the options it costs about $16,000, according to the company.
Manley said holding the device over the side of a vessel may not be the best option, but it should work.
The handheld device used by the Chinese is much different from the U.S. Navy hydrophone — or underwater microphone — called a towed pinger locator. One is on board the Australian ship Ocean Shield, which recently joined the search for Flight 370.
This high-tech listening device can glide along near the bottom of the sea. The towed pinger locator, or TPL, is 30 inches long and weighs just 70 pounds.
It’s towed behind the ship that generally moves at slow speeds, generally from 1 to 5 knots.
The device can pick up the pinger sound in depths reaching 20,000 feet. A pinger can be detected at a range of 1 to 2 miles.
The TPL is more sensitive, more expensive and, since it is towed in the ocean, will have a better detection range, said Tom W. Altshuler, vice president and group general manager for Teledyne Marine Systems.
“One is designed to find a pinger in deep water, the other is designed to find a pinger in shallow water,” said Altshuler.

The search area for the missing Malaysia airlines flight MH370 has been drastically reduced after two further detections of pings consistent with those of a black box from a plane late on Tuesday.

The head of Australia’s Joint Agency Co-ordination Centre, Angus Houston, said on Wednesday the Australian defence vessel Ocean Shield had detected two further pings on Tuesday – one in the afternoon and one in the late evening – that had allowed the search area to be further refined to 75,000 sq km. He said he was “optimistic” the plane would be found soon.

Though the new detections were “great lead,” Houston cautioned that there is still a long way to go and no final conclusion can be made until “somebody sees the wreckage.”

Up to 11 military aircraft, four civil aircraft and 14 ships joined Wednesday’s hunt for MH370 as the search area has been narrowed to about 75,423 square kilometers.
