An Occupy Wall Street member accused of assaulting a New York Police Department officer testified in her own defense Tuesday, saying she is nonviolent and advocated against using physical force inside the movement.
Cecily McMillan, a 25-year-old graduate student, is the final criminal defendant stemming from the arrests made during the months when Occupy Wall Street was camped at Zuccotti Park or tried to reclaim the lower Manhattan space after being evicted, prosecutors said.
Ms. McMillan previously declined an offer from prosecutors to plead guilty to second-degree assault on a police officer in exchange for a recommendation that she not serve prison time.

The cross-examination ended at 5pm. Closing arguments will begin Friday, May 2nd, at 9:30am, followed by jury deliberation and verdict. A press conference with Cecily’s lawyers and a prepared statement from Cecily herself will follow the verdict in front of 100 Centre St.
This verdict marks the end of a long and difficult two-year limbo for Cecily and the last big criminal case stemming from OWS. The verdict of this trial will set an important precedent for future social movements in NYC.
