UK Asylum Seekers Just Held a Mass Hunger Strike in Their Detention Centre

On Friday, there was a mass hunger strike at Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre near Heathrow airport. Detainees – mostly asylum seekers whose claims are judged to have failed – downed forks in protest at their living conditions, as well as the obvious annoyance of being held somewhere indefinitely before being returned to a country you want to escape from. If you ask GEO Group, who run the centre, as few as 30 people protested. However, asylum seekers claimed it was about ten times that number.

Campsfield House concerns raised

CONCERNS over conditions at an immigration detention centre have been raised at a shareholders’ meeting.

Campsfield House near Kidlington has been run by Mitie on behalf of the Home Office since 2011.

More than 50 detainees went on hunger strike earlier this year and more than 100 were led out from the Langford Lane centre during a major fire in October.

More chaos at Harmondsworth as new protest takes place overnight

About 70 detainees at Harmondsworth removal centre took part in a protest last night which was broken up by a special police unit, inmates have told me.

Also on this day hundreds of thousands marched on the streets of London for Gaza, MFJ brought together these struggles of the oppressed at Harmondsworth, demanding freedom for Palestine and freedom for all detainee’s.
