Up to 1,000 coal miners rallied on Wednesday in support of armed pro-Russian separatists who are battling Ukrainian forces in defence of their self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” (DNR) in eastern Ukraine.

A day after Kiev unleashed warplanes and paratroopers against the separatists in a major offensive that killed at least 50 rebels, the miners marched through Donetsk city centre to demand the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the region.

“Kiev does not rule us any more, we will no longer accept that,” separatist leader Denis Pushilin told the miners, who had been bussed in from around the Donbass coalfield, as a Ukrainian fighter jet roared overhead.

The protesters, from Ukraine’s largest mine workers’ union, waved DNR flags and banners that read “We will revive the power of the Donbass”. The Donbass, comprising coal mines and steel mills, is Ukraine’s industrial heartland.

“I’m afraid of everything that’s happening. I have survived one war already. That was enough for me,” said one elderly woman.

Reste à savoir si cet enthousiasme électoral est sincère ou feint. Un article du « New York Times » affirme que des pressions ont été exercées par des officiels de l’ambassade de Syrie au Liban, enjoignant à des réfugiés d’aller aux urnes « s’ils espéraient pouvoir rentrer un jour chez eux ». L’ambassade a nié ces accusations, affirmant que ces témoignages rapportaient des propos tenus lors d’un programme d’inscription des électeurs.

Le quotidien libanais francophone « L’Orient-Le Jour » a révélé, de son côté, des opérations « de ramassages organisés » d’ouvriers syriens, qui auraient été effectuées dans une région industrielle au nord de Beyrouth. Selon un industriel libanais, cité par le journal, des hommes, décrits comme étant libanais et membres du Hezbollah, le parti chiite allié du régime de Damas, sont venus rassembler une centaine d’employés syriens. Après avoir pris leurs papiers d’identités, ils les auraient fait monter dans des vans, direction l’ambassade de Syrie. « Selon l’industriel, les employés ne pouvaient pas vraiment refuser d’embarquer à bord des vans », indique « L’Orient-Le Jour ».

Ce qu’il n’a pas dit, cependant, c’est que de nombreux Syriens ont été sommés de se rendre à l’ambassade pour voter, sous peine de représailles, et que le Hezbollah et le Parti syrien national social (PSNS) se sont activés pour organiser ce qui a fini par devenir, au grand dam de l’État et du citoyen libanais, une démonstration de force pro-Assad, lamentable et provocatrice. « On m’a fait comprendre que si je ne me rendais pas pour voter, je ne pourrais plus retourner dans mon pays », raconte ainsi ce jeune chrétien de Syrie, employé dans une boutique à Beyrouth. À l’ambassade de Syrie, raconte-t-il, on lui a fait signer un registre et c’est le fonctionnaire de service qui a glissé à sa place un bulletin dans l’urne. Inutile de préciser que dans ce bureau de vote, l’isoloir n’existe pas.

In the eastern Lebanese town of Marj, a tented settlement for refugees was half empty on Wednesday morning. Residents said some people were at work, others had gone to vote. Some said they felt compelled to vote out of fear that Syrian authorities were monitoring them.

“We don’t want to vote, but if we don’t and they don’t let us go back to Syria, what do we do then?” said Kifah, a refugee from Syria’s rebellious eastern Ghouta region near Damascus. She declined to give her last name because of security concerns.

“يا عيب الشوم” أقل كلمة طالت الدولة اللبنانية اليوم، خصوصاً وزارة الداخلية والبلديات، جراء تقصيرها في تنظيم عملية الانتخابات السورية الرئاسية في سفارة دمشق في اليرزة. المشهد كان كارثياً وفوضوياً، إذ استهل اللبنانيون يومهم بصباح متوتر لعن فيه بعضهم اليوم الذي ولدوا فيه لبنانيين. زحمة سير، طرق مقفلة، طلاب لم يصلوا إلى امتحاناتهم، عمال غابوا عن أعمالهم لساعات، اشعة شمس حارقة، سيارات تعطلت من الزحمة وغيرها من المظاهر التي تستقيل الحكومة على اثرها لو كان البلد حضارياً.

Il y a tout de même une invraisemblable contradiction du 14 Mars à, d’un côté, s’étrangler de haine raciste en réclamant l’expulsion des syriens qui ont voté et à, dans le même temps, prétendre qu’ils ont été forcés à voter à l’insu de leur plein gré.

Ils ont une attitude raciste de principe et ils cherchent par tous les moyens à la mettre en avant. L’important c’est que les gens aient un sentiment viscérale envers les syriens.

March 14 General Secretariat Coordinator Fares Soaid on Thursday called for taking “necessary measures” towards Syrians “moving freely” between Lebanon and Syria, stressing that they are not part of the refugees who have fled “the killing machine called Bashar Assad.”

“The scene of the Syrian presidential elections that were held in Lebanon raises a question mark regarding the definition of a Syrian refugee. Do all Syrians residing in Lebanon really need to be in Lebanon?” Soaid said after meeting Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea in Maarab.

“The heroic Syrian people are fighting a killing machine called Bashar Assad,” the embattled Syrian president who is seeking a third presidential term.

And as he noted that “Lebanon has utilized its assets and opened its heart and mind for all Syrian families,” Soaid added: “Are all Syrians in Lebanon afraid for their safety or are they crossing the Lebanese-Syrian border under the eyes of the Lebanese General Security?”

The first question that came to mind on May 28: Has Syrian tutelage returned? Has it returned through this show of force that resembled a military parade? Everyone was surprised how “Syrian voters” invaded the streets of Beirut. This was not a spontaneous event triggered by the Syrian presidential elections, rather, it was an “organized surprise” that sent multiple messages, including that the forces supporting the Assad regime are still present in Lebanon and are highly prepared.

Unlike in 1976, when Syrian tanks invaded Lebanon, the Syrians have returned through throngs of people — the exact opposite of what happened in the spring of 2005, when the masses of the Cedar Revolution swept Beirut demanding the withdrawal of Syria from Lebanon, a demand that was implemented in April of that year.

Syrian refugees in Lebanon will lose their status as such if they return home for a visit, the interior ministry said Saturday.

At the same time, there are calls among political and media figures associated with the Western and Saudi-backed Marched 14 political alliance for deporting those who voted in an election in which Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is expected to win.

More than a million Syrians have fled their war-torn country for Lebanon in the past three years, according to the United Nations.

“Syrian displaced people who are registered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees are requested to refrain from entering into Syria starting June 1, 2014, or be penalized by losing their status as refugees in Lebanon,” said the March 14-aligned ministry.

The interior and municipalities minister, Nouhad al-Machnouk, tried yesterday in vain to lessen the effect of the shock that befell his political team upon seeing droves of Syrian voters heading to their country’s embassy in Lebanon’s Yarze last week to take part in the presidential election. He said they were at most six percent of the total number of Syrians in Lebanon. He threw numbers around haphazardly and could not justify the reason that prompted him to issue a decision to revoke the refugee status of any Syrian citizen who visits their country.

Machnouk wanted to proceed with the US-Saudi-European decision to block the Syrian elections. He tried to keep Syrians in Lebanon from participating in the election so he issued a decision that prevents them from holding “political gatherings.” But the scene in Yarze prompted him to raise the bar a notch. He gave the refugees two options, to either participate in the elections or maintain their status as refugees, claiming that it is impossible to do both. The purpose of Machnouk’s actions is to prevent Syrian refugees from being anything but supporters of the Syrian opposition .

The interior minister tried in vain to distance his decision from politics. In an interview with al-Jadeed TV channel yesterday, he said that he proposed to the Syrian government, through a Lebanese security agency, transferring polling stations to a border area between the Masnaa crossing on the Lebanese side and Jdeidet Yabous crossing on the Syrian side but the Syrian side rejected the proposal. Did Machnouk believe that Damascus would participate in a political decision of this kind? The minister used security concerns and Lebanon’s inability to keep its border permanently open to Syrian refugees to justify his decision. What is certain is that this decision turns refugees into prisoners in Lebanon based on the claim that the refugee status does not apply to anyone who can enter Syria.
