Survivors, corpses from latest migrant disaster arrive
Palermo, June 15 - The survivors of the latest migrant-boat disaster south of Italy were among 767 rescued people aboard a Navy ship that docked in Palermo on Sunday. The ship was also carrying 10 dead bodies, including the corpses of seven women, recovered after a boat carrying 90 migrants ran into trouble on Saturday. The Navy rescued 39 people which means another 41 are missing. On Saturday Interior Minister Angelino Alfano threatened to close the Mare Nostrum sea rescue operation unless the European Union takes charge of it, as Italy struggles to cope with a massive increase this year in the already big flow of migrants who attempt the hazardous crossing from North Africa to Italy. Rome launched Mare Nostrum after around 400 people were killed in two migrant-boat disasters in October. Alfano has said almost 40,000 migrants landed on Italy’s shores in the first five months of this year - almost as many as the total for all of last year. Many thousands more have arrived so far in June. The Navy said on Sunday that 1,812 migrants were rescued on Saturday alone. Premier Matteo Renzi accused the European Union of looking the other way and not doing enough to help Italy after dozens of people were killed in two other migrant disasters in May. “Europe explains everything about how to catch swordfish, but it turns its head when we go to rescue people in trouble,” he said. The government has come under fire over the Mare Nostrum Operation, which some opposition parties say is encouraging people traffickers to increase illegal crossings.
