Reddit Moderators Shut Down Parts of Site Over Employee’s Dismissal
▻http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/04/technology/reddit-moderators-shut-down-parts-of-site-over-executives-dismissal.html
Hundreds of sections of #Reddit, the popular online message board, were unavailable Friday in what appeared to be a protest by many of the site’s moderators after the abrupt dismissal of a high-ranking company employee.
The move affected nearly 300 individual discussion areas — so-called subreddits that focus on individual topics like technology, art and business. Subreddits are generally moderated by self-appointed members of the community, not official Reddit employees. The shutdowns, which began on Thursday evening, appeared to expand rapidly on Friday.
They began shortly after Victoria Taylor, Reddit’s director of talent, was dismissed on Thursday afternoon. On Friday, the volunteers posted a document online that asked for better communication with official staff, as well as improved software tools for community management.

Reddit Is Proving How #Crowdsourcing Can Act Fast
Reddit has incurred the wrath of moderators and admins across their site by the removal of one of their top admins and employees, Victoria Taylor, who oversaw the /AMA module. The reasons why Taylor is no longer with Reddit are pretty murky, but moderators have closed huge swathes of the site, setting various forums to private in protest at a lack of transparency and what they deem a lack of respect by Reddit. It highlights the conflict at the heart of crowdsourcing: Decentralization gives freedom for expansion, but it also means the crowd may not act in the way you want it to.

CritterNYC comments on Github may be inaccessible today due to a DDoS attack by the Chinese government using Baidu
▻https://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/30hk3l/github_may_be_inaccessible_today_due_to_a_ddos/cpsk8z4
From a few different analysis oh HN and elsewhere... Baidu has an analytics product and an ads product, much like Google Analytics and Google AdSense, which are used on all kinds of websites via Javascript. China has set the Great Firewall of China to modify some of Baidu’s assets so that any non-Chinese IP gets a modified version of the Baidu analytics and ad code. The modification causes every web browser visiting a Chinese site using a Baidu analytics/ad product to load files from the greatfire and cn-nytimes projects on github (both of which are designed to circumvent Chinese government censorship) once every 2 seconds. The effect is that people all over the world outside of China are unwilling participants in a DDoS against github.
github has responded by taking both projects offline and replacing their content with a simple Javascript alert that shows a “WARNING: malicious javascript detected on this domain” messagebox. This causes the folks visiting baidu-infected sites to see the alert and know something is wrong with the website (hopefully not visiting it again). It also prevents the malicious Javascript from executing in a loop and reloading the site every 2 seconds.
One takeaway is that you should always have a backup of your code and resources outside a single central site like github. Another is that you should never ever have any webpage configured to load any resources from a server hosted within China IP address space as it is vulnerable to this sort of attack by the Chinese government.

Question : êtes-vous un agent russe ?
Russian journalist Andrei Soldatov has described your daily life as circumscribed by Russian state security services, which he said control the circumstances of your life there. Is this accurate? What are your interactions with Russian state security like? With Russian government representatives generally?
Réponse de Snowden :
Good question, thanks for asking.
The answer is “of course not.” You’ll notice in all of these articles, the assertions ultimately come down to speculation and suspicion. None of them claim to have any actual proof, they’re just so damned sure I’m a russian spy that it must be true.
And I get that. I really do. I mean come on - I used to teach “cyber counterintelligence” (their term) at DIA.
But when you look at in aggregate, what sense does that make? If I were a russian spy, why go to Hong Kong? It’s would have been an unacceptable risk. And further - why give any information to journalists at all, for that matter, much less so much and of such importance? Any intelligence value it would have to the russians would be immediately compromised.
If I were a spy for the russians, why the hell was I trapped in any airport for a month? I would have gotten a parade and a medal instead.
The reality is I spent so long in that damn airport because I wouldn’t play ball and nobody knew what to do with me. I refused to cooperate with Russian intelligence in any way (see my testimony to EU Parliament on this one if you’re interested), and that hasn’t changed.
At this point, I think the reason I get away with it is because of my public profile. What can they really do to me? If I show up with broken fingers, everybody will know what happened.

We can devise means, through the application and sophistication of science, to remind governments that if they will not be responsible stewards of our rights, we the people will implement systems that provide for a means of not just enforcing our rights, but removing from governments the ability to interfere with those rights.
(…) Our rights are not granted by governments. They are inherent to our nature. But it’s entirely the opposite for governments: their privileges are precisely equal to only those which we suffer them to enjoy.
We haven’t had to think about that much in the last few decades because quality of life has been increasing across almost all measures in a significant way, and that has led to a comfortable complacency. But here and there throughout history, we’ll occasionally come across these periods where governments think more about what they “can” do rather than what they “should” do, and what is lawful will become increasingly distinct from what is moral.
In such times, we’d do well to remember that at the end of the day, the law doesn’t defend us; we defend the law. And when it becomes contrary to our morals, we have both the right and the responsibility to rebalance it toward just ends.

►https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/augustgermar/anonabox-a-tor-hardware-router
But as of Thursday morning, the backlash against that project had become so severe that its total funding was actually ticking down rather than up, as disillusioned backers pulled their pledges faster than others could make them. The comments section on the Kickstarter page had filled with users accusing the project’s creators of fraud, many asking Kickstarter to cancel the fundraiser.
[...]
But as the security community has taken notice of Anonabox over the last week, its analysts and penetration testers have found that the router’s software also has serious problems, ones that could punch holes in its Tor protections or even allow a user to be more easily tracked than if they were connecting to the unprotected Internet.
[...]
But Germar argues that all the criticisms of the Anonabox stem from miscommunication, not carelessness or any attempt to scam users. He admits that he should have made clear which parts of the Anonabox’s hardware he sourced from China rather than give users the impression he was custom-building the parts from scratch. But he denies the software issues represent real vulnerabilities. Instead, he describes them as issues of user education. Germar says he intended to include warnings in the final documentation to change the router’s root password, for instance.

The new version we are calling gen 5 will have:
–All new totally custom circuit board avalable nowhere else in the world
–Redesigned outer case and smaller form factor (images of the new case will be posted in the updates!)
–Hardened version of OpenWrt the Open Source Operating system,
-Latest version of Tor software and more secure configuration.
–Automatic updates of Tor software (no need to configure!)
Also:
The funds from our backers will go to paying for production costs, and a portion will also be donated to the Official Tor Project and the Electronic Frontier foundation.

Première réponse:
The Hot Zone is good, but perhaps a bit dramatic.
Ebola is easy to spread when the conditions are right. When hospitals dont match 1st world standards, when disease control measures are poor, when people are not aware of the situation, when burial and burial preparation is amateur. In other words poor 3rd world countries.
In the first world its a tougher thing. People can be educated quickly and easily. Our abilities to quarantine and care for the sick are excellent. Peoples hygiene awareness is better.
Ebola has only spread past quarantine with people already sick. I’m not aware that anyone has subsequently got sick.
Its primarily fluid transfer based. This MAY be in aerosol format if somone coughs up blood, but its fairly limited.
So far, in 30 years, Ebola has killed less people than Malaria kills every two days. AIDS has killed 30 million people worldwide, Ebola 2000 in the same time. This must tell you something.
It IS a very nasty disease, but the way it works limits its effectiveness.

Du coup j’ajoute Peerflix :

Peerflix is an experimental streaming video client using bittorrent through torrent-stream.
#Popcorn Time Devs Drop Like Flies, But No One Will Talk | TorrentFreak
▻http://torrentfreak.com/popcorn-time-devs-drop-like-flies-but-no-one-will-talk-140420
Popcorn Time was one of the most-discussed topics last month with contributors happy to chat and bathe in the publicity. Recently though, something has changed. Previously talkative developers have deleted their work, gone silent, disappeared, or all of the above. It’s hard not to draw the obvious conclusion.
Et enfin :

Popcorn Time Vulnerable to Hack Attacks, Researcher Says
▻https://torrentfreak.com/popcorn-time-vulnerable-to-hack-attacks-researcher-says-150803
The researcher says that the problems begin with “a really smart” technique that Popcorn Time uses to bypass ISP-level blocking in the UK. By utilizing Cloudflare infrastructure for part of its setup, it’s difficult to block Popcorn Time by DNS without banning the Cloudflare website, Chariton notes.
But cleverness aside, this is where the problems begin.
“First of all, the request to Cloudflare is initiated over plain HTTP. That means both the request and the response can be changed by someone with a Man In The Middle position (Local Attacker, Network Administrator, ISP, Government, etc.),” Chariton explains.
“The second mistake is that there is no input sanitization whatsoever. That means, there are no checks in place to ensure the validity of the data received. The third mistake is that they make the previous two mistakes in a NodeJS application.”
