Satellites capture Istanbul’s ‘gray’ transformation over past decade - GREEN

A comparison of 20 satellite photos hosted by Google Earth reveals how Istanbul has changed with more concrete and less green spaces in the past decade.
As the ongoing construction boom continues with controversial development projects that have angered locals and environmentalists, Mutlu Kent, an urban blog, compiled the satellite photos of Istanbul to show the appearance of various sites today and 10 years ago.
Yaşar Adnan Adanalı, a Turkish Ph. D candidate at Berlin Technical University’s International Urban Institute, said in his blog post on Oct. 29 that “all empty spaces in Istanbul are now being filled” by this transformation.
Turkey plans to increase coal powered electricity production
▻http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-plans-to-increase-coal-powered-electricity-production.aspx
The Turkish government plans to double its electricity production with coal power in 2018, which will include a policy that will increase the country’s coal production.
Turkey produced 32 billion kwH of electricity with coal power plants in 2013 and plans to increase this amount to 57 billion kwh in 2018, as part of its new economy plans.
Turkey will introduce new tenders for the construction of coal power plants in Afşin, Elbistan, Konya, Karapınar and Ergene, areas which are rich with coal reserves.
Cars out of Taksim, Turkey’s new economic plan says
▻http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/cars-out-of-taksim-turkeys-new-economic-plan-says.aspx?pageID=238
The Turkish government’s new economic plan stipulates a policy that would introduce a fee on motor vehicles in metropolitan city centers, including Istanbul’s Taksim neighborhood.
Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu announced nine of the 25 transformational economic programs at a press conference Nov. 6. Besides ambitious macroeconomic targets, like increasing Turkey’s GDP from $800 billion to $1.3 trillion by 2018, Davutoğlu said the first nine-point plan includes 417 action plans that will affect the daily lives of citizens.
Some of the proposed policies on transportation have sparked public debate. To decrease energy inefficiency and traffic congestion, particularly in Istanbul and Ankara, the government’s plan involves limiting motor vehicle presence in city centers like Taksim and Kızılay. Those using automobiles will pay a fee to travel in these areas with a new system called Smart Transportation System (AUS), according to the plan.
Turkey’s religious top body marks holy month for Alevis
▻http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkeys-religious-top-body-marks-holy-month-for-alevis.aspx?pageI
The head of Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) has sent a letter to the Alevi community for the holy month of Muharram, as well as Ashura and Karbala, saying all Muslims should unit under common values in order to avoid new Karbalas, regardless of sectarian differences.
“No matter their sect, temperament, language, culture and region, all Muslims around the world need to develop a common language, culture, thought and feelings togetherness in order to avoid new Karbalas,” said Mehmet Görmez in his letter to Alevi religious leaders (dedes), as well as Bektaşi and Caferi opinion leaders and NGOs working on the topic.
Efforts to build a wall of separation between Sunnis and Alevis by focusing on Karbala would destroy Islamic brotherhood and unity, Görmez said, adding that a believer in Islam should stand against felons wherever and whenever.
In the Battle of Karbala of 680 A.D., the supporters and relatives of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Husayn ibn Ali, were all killed by the forces of Yazid I, the Sunni Umayyad caliph, who Husayn refused to recognize as caliph. The dead are regarded as martyrs by Muslims, and the battle has a central place in Alevi and Shiite history and tradition.
Görmez will host a Muharram feast on Nov. 3 as part of the “Ashura Day and Commemorating of the Karbala Martyrs” event, while Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has announced that he will attend the Hacıbektaş Veli Culture Association’s Ashura event on Nov. 8, in the Hacıbektaş district of the Central Anatolian province of Nevşehir.

Senior AKP deputy slams Erdoğan, his party over Kurdish policies: BBC
Turkish Daily News
▻http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/senior-akp-deputy-slams-erdogan-his-party-over-kurdish-policies-b
A senior member of Parliament from Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has slammed President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his party over Kurdish policies, BBC Turkish reported Oct. 18.
The AKP deputy, who spoke to BBC correspondent Paul Moss in Istanbul on condition of anonymity, directed “harsh criticism” at Erdoğan and the AKP, according to the report.
“It is very hard to understand why the government decided to attack the PKK. President Erdoğan is focused on increasing his votes, not to solve the Kurdish problem. I believe that the peace process may soon collapse and this would drive the country into chaos,” the AKP MP reportedly said.
Hürriyet had reported that Turkish fighter jets bombarded positions of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) late Oct. 13, following militant attacks on military outposts in southeastern Turkey, in a first since the start of the peace process.
Many provinces in Turkey’s east, as well as the largest cities of the country, saw violent protests against the government’s policies over the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s (ISIL) advance on the Syrian border town of Kobane. Some 37 people were killed and hundreds were injured in the demonstrations.
The Kobane protests were seen by many observers as a potential risk for the peace process that the government started in 2013 to solve Turkey’s Kurdish problem.
İbrahim Yıldırım, who worked at the AKP’s Istanbul branch, on the other hand, supported the government’s decision to attack the PKK following the protests. “The PKK is still a terrorist organization. Thanks God none of our soldiers were killed, but they were targeted in terrorist attacks. Our Air Force didn’t plan the airstrike out of the blue,” he said, according to the BBC Turkish report.
Public bus with green roof takes to Istanbul’s streets
▻http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/public-bus-with-green-roof-takes-to-istanbuls-streets.aspx?pageID
The evergreen species planted on the bus’ roof absorb CO2 emitted by the bus while it makes its way across town. The plants then release oxygen that helps clean the air, and the garden also naturally cools the interior of the bus.
The roof-top garden is watered using condensation drawn from the bus’s air conditioning conduits, according to environmental engineer Fatmanur Yılmaz, who is involved in the İETT project.
“We created a garden by recycling the unused area on the roof of the bus. We use water obtained from the air conditioning system to irrigate the garden. We wanted to emphasize how important even the water from the air conditioning system is,” Yılmaz said.
“The project provides heat-saving because sunlight does not directly touch the bus. The plants photosynthesize, so we minimize the carbon emission and produce oxygen,” she added.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has not ruled out establishing a no-fly zone over northeastern Syria to protect civilians from airstrikes by the Syrian government, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Friday.
Mr. Hagel and General Dempsey indicated they are open to considering the request of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey for a buffer zone along the Turkish-Syrian border, where tens of thousands of Syrians have sought refuge. Mr. Hagel said, “We’ve discussed all these possibilities and will continue to talk about what the Turks believe they will require.” He said 1.3 million Syrian refugees are now in Turkey.

Kurds see little hope Islamic State won’t take Kobane
▻http://www.sanluisobispo.com/2014/09/30/3272777_kurds-see-little-hope-islamic.html
If the U.S. and its Arab allies appeared reluctant to save Kobane from the Islamic State, there was no sign that Turkey would intervene, either. The Turkish military brought more than 30 tanks and armored vehicles to the border Monday and menacingly pointed their turrets into Syria. But one day later, they were parked in a lot close to the border with no sign of crews.
The tragedy of the Kobane region is that its leadership had been able to secure peace and calm for the past two years, a period in which internally displaced Kurds and other groups migrated there by the tens of thousands. When the Islamic State began pressuring last spring, the local Kurdish militia, known by its Kurdish initials as the YPG, seemed to be able to hold them off. But in recent days, the Islamic State has been advancing, and the U.S. coalition, no doubt spurred on by Turkey’s fears that the YPG is allied with its own Kurdish separatist insurgents, hasn’t come to the rescue. When Turkish Kurds tried to send in fighters, the Turkish government stopped them, using tear gas.

TURKEY’S PRIORITY IS A NO-FLY ZONE
“Three things are of the utmost importance,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in late September. “Firstly, the formation of a no-fly zone; secondly, the formation of a safe haven on the Syrian side and preparation for its organization and administration; and thirdly we will discuss which actors will manage this process.”
Next week, the top two officials running the U.S. campaign against the Islamic State, John Allen and Brett McGurk, will be visiting Turkey. The Ankara government is then expected to try to negotiate accession to the anti-jihadi coalition in return for U.S. participation in a no-fly zone over northern Syria.
Such direct military intervention against Assad’s government is something the United States has long sought to avoid, but it is a core goal of Turkish policy and a long-standing demand of much of Syria’s opposition. With the U.S. Air Force now operating inside Syrian airspace and the Turkish parliament having cleared the way for foreign forces on its soil, a no-fly zone is no longer the distant possibility it used to be. But U.S. and Turkish views on the issue remain far apart, and overcoming U.S. objections will prove much harder for Erdoğan than securing the support of his own parliament.

“Just be for once human enough to say ‘to hell with these towers – if only none of my workers had died’ as a boss. But you have lost your conscience to the point that while workers are being murdered so that you can earn more money and live in fancier yachts or flats, you say ‘we won’t let the name of our company be stained,’” Demirtaş said Sept. 8 after visiting the site of the accident.
“These towers are like gravestones for mass graves,” he added, denouncing the government’s attempt to evade any thorough investigation regarding the conditions of workers.
An aerial tour of Istanbul’s disappearing forests
▻http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/an-aerial-tour-of-istanbuls-disappearing-forests.aspx?pageID=238&
What happened to Istanbul’s forests?
Istanbul’s population is rapidly increasing, and consequently, residential settlement is widening. The 36,000 hectares of settlement in the 1970s, has now surpassed 110,000 hectares, an increase of over 400 percent. The same period has also witnessed an increase in the city’s population of around 370 percent. This is the main reason why the forests—Istanbul’s life source—are being destroyed. The change is so severe that Istanbul’s forestland is down to 240,000 hectares from 270,000 hectares in the 1970s. The reduction is roughly the equivalent of 60,000 football fields
J’ai fait aujourd’hui une copie d’écran de la carte d’Istanbul via google map satellite.

Et la restitution des informations satellites
▻http://gtixier.free.fr/acquisition.htm

Illegal electricity use lingers as a fraught issue in eastern Turkey
▻http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/illegal-electricity-use-lingers-as-a-fraught-issue-in-eastern-tur
The age-old problem of illegal electricity usage in eastern and southeastern Turkey, which has risen to the agenda once again with recent power outages, has deep and complex roots that cannot be explained solely by “poverty” or “political views.”
For the past few weeks, eastern Turkey has been gripped by more regular power cuts than usual, making the hot summer days even more difficult for locals. Illegal power usage is one of the major causes of the cuts, and there are several explanations for why locals are resorting to this illegal power.
