Neither beggars, nor thieves. Roma people want to be physicians
Climbing up a tram and harass the audience by playing an accordion. And end the performance without begging, but giving medical advice to the audience. This is the provocation by a group of young Roma students in Bucharest, determined to overturn the popular stereotypes about their community in collaboration with the Open Society Foundations. “I was not born with rhythm in my veins,” said Madalina, who wants to be a doctor one day. “We are not here to beg,” her fellows add “studying is important to us. And it is important that you know that the Roma do not always want to ask you or steal something. They can also offer you something”.Just like them, young doctors, ready to offer free examinations and a hot tea in the crowded streets.
