The situation is no different in northern Akkar. A university professor from one of the biggest Christian towns there confirmed to Al-Monitor that night watch security is now a regular phenomenon. He said it is spreading among the town’s environs, where hundreds of retired soldiers live. The Sunni villages in Akkar are doing the same. Everyone in the region is concerned about IS. The Christians fear for their lives, and the Sunnis fear being dragged by IS into an unwanted battle with the Syrian army, which is standing on alert at the nearby border.
