Making a photograph speak is a common journalistic exercise, yet it is a perilous one, since much of the image’s story remains unseen on it – the outside of the frame, the position of the photographer for instance. The photograph above, taken in the Spanish enclave of Melilla (North Morocco) on October 22, 2014, despite (or because) its striking symbolism, does not escape to the rule. The flattening of perspective we can see on it suggests that the photograph has been taken from a long distance of its subjects, with the help of a large range zoom. When attempting to situates it scene on google earth, we can realize that the wall separating the Moroccan and Spanish territory is not situated in the golf course itself, but actually slightly further on a road at its periphery. The visual encounter of the migrants climbing up the wall, the policeman, and the two golfers is therefore not as direct as it suggests. This photograph, like any other, constructs a vision that is to be slightly dissociated from a self-sustaining truth discourse.

À noter que l’argument de l’article cité en deuxième commentaire n’est pas très convaincant. Il suggère que c’est une mise en scène, que le mur est très loin du golf, et utilise google earth pour sa démonstration. Mais au contraire, la carte montre bien que le mur est juste au bord du golf. Aucun trucage.

IMMIGRATION - Alors que Marine Le Pen s’est rendue vendredi à Calais pour dénoncer la situation que connaît la ville suite à l’afflux de centaines de migrants clandestins et afin de militer pour un retour des contrôles aux frontières, c’est une photo de frontière, justement, une image saisissante, presque surréaliste, qui s’est affichée en une du journal espagnol El Mundo jeudi et qui fait le tour du monde depuis.

L’enclave espagnole au Maroc : la réalité derrière la photo
NADOR, 13 janvier 2015 (IRIN) - Fin 2014, une image a beaucoup circulé sur Internet. On y voit deux golfeuses, vêtues de blanc sur un luxueux parcours de golf, qui semblent faire abstraction de la présence en arrière-plan d’une dizaine de migrants qui tentent de passer en Europe en escaladant la barrière grillagée qui marque la frontière.
