Donald Trump Plans to ‘Pare Back’ Top U.S. Spy Agency
▻http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/01/donald-trump-plans-to-slim-down-top-u-s-spy-agency.html
Donald Trump has spent much of the past month assailing America’s intelligence agencies over Twitter. But now, he’s plotting to hit them where it hurts – right in their budgets.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the president-elect is working with his top advisors on a plan to “restructure and pare back” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which they believe has become “bloated and politicized.”
Trump’s team is also, reportedly, drafting a similar plan for the CIA – one that would cut staffing at the agency’s Virginia headquarters and send more agents out into the field.
“The view from the Trump team is the intelligence world [is] becoming completely politicized,” an individual close to Trump’s transition operation told the Journal. “They all need to be slimmed down. The focus will be on restructuring the agencies and how they interact.”

One of the common attributes of long-lasting boxing greats is that they never get out of shape between fights. Hopkins is always in the gym. He doesn’t drink alcohol or even eat sweets.
“If I had the willpower that Bernard has, I would still be fighting too,” former foe Oscar De La Hoya said. “Bernard lives, eats, and breathes boxing.”
When asked about the secret to his longevity, Hopkins credited his diet and regimen but also how he changed his workouts as he got older. “Making them more efficient. I do much less sparring and always with the purpose of working on something in particular,” Hopkins said. “And I do a lot more flexibility and reactions drills.”

Fentanyl Billionaire Comes Under Fire as Death Toll Mounts From Prescription Opioids - WSJ

Before they were arrested last year, Alabama doctors John Couch and Xiulu Ruan were prized customers of Insys Therapeutics Inc., maker of a powerful and highly addictive type of synthetic opioid known as fentanyl.
Drs. Couch and Ruan prescribed a combined $4.9 million of the painkiller, called Subsys, to Medicare patients in 2013 and 2014, among the most of any doctors in the U.S., federal data show.
Insys, based in Chandler, Ariz., went to unusual lengths to keep these high-prescribing doctors happy. Insys Executive Chairman John N. Kapoor, the company’s billionaire co-founder, personally traveled to Mobile, Ala., to attend a business dinner with them, said people familiar with the matter. The doctors were also frequent speakers and consultants for Insys, which paid them $270,700 in combined fees over 21 months, according to government data.

In 2013, when the Egyptian military toppled president Mohammed Morsi, the country’s two most famous theologians offered starkly contrasting views of the shake-up. Ali Gomaa, formerly Egypt’s highest religious official, claimed that since Mr. Morsi no longer had power, he was no longer legitimate. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a Qatar-based sheik with a global public following, retorted that the military had committed “rebellion,” a grievous sin in Islam. But the theologians were in total agreement about one thing: Mr. Morsi was an “imām”—a key term in the language of political Islam and often a synonym for an even more weighty word, “caliph.”

Athens bucks allies by vetoing renewal of sanctions against bank U.S. accuses of financing terrorism
[…]
Greece has spurned its European allies and Washington by blocking European Union sanctions on an Iranian bank the U.S. accuses of financing terrorism, officials familiar with the move say.
Athens’s action last month marked the first time a European country has picked apart the sanctions regime meant to remain in place after the July 2015 nuclear accord with Tehran. The regime is designed to constrain Iran’s ability to resume illicit activities and pressure it to stick by the rules.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s government undertook to end the sanctions on Bank Saderat, a partly state-owned company that runs Iran’s largest banking network, as Athens seeks to rebuild close economic ties with Iran, a key source of cheap energy for the country in the past. Athens has also been critical of EU sanctions on Russia.
But the stance is potentially risky for Greece, which will host President Barack Obama this month. U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew warned last year that any firm that deals with Bank Saderat “will risk losing its access to the U.S. financial system.”
