Born on a Wisconsin farm in 1868, Edward Sheriff Curtis grew up to become a commercial photographer in Seattle. In 1895 he photographed Princess Angeline, the daughter of the Duwamish chief Seattle, for whom the city was named.

That encounter sparked Curtis’ lifelong fascination with the cultures and lives of Native American tribes. He soon joined expeditions to visit tribes in Alaska and Montana.

In 1906, Curtis was approached by wealthy financier J.P. Morgan, who was interested in funding a documentary project on the indigenous people of the continent. They conceived a 20-volume series, called The North American Indian.

Kuwait arrest raises specter of Ukraine black market as source of arms for ISIS

The arrest in Kuwait of a Lebanese man with ties to the Islamic State has raised the specter that Ukraine’s notorious illicit arms market may be a source of weapons for the the militant group.

One senior Ukrainian official with access to intelligence agency reports told Mashable on Friday that it is “plausible” the man, arrested by Kuwaiti authorities on Thursday, had obtained FN-6 surface-to-air missile systems he admitted to getting from a broker in Ukraine. Calling news of the arrest “interesting,” the official stopped short of giving a definitive answer to a question about whether Kiev had direct information about the arms sale in question.

FN-6 shoulder-fired missile systems, manufactured by China, have never been sold to Ukraine, nor has the government given permission for their transit through its territory, the Ukrainian defense ministry said in a statement on Friday. And there have been no documented reports of the the FN-6 shoulder-fired missile systems appearing in Ukraine since the war began in April 2014.

But that doesn’t mean the weapons couldn’t have been transported into the country another way, the senior official admitted, adding that Kiev has monitored the illicit trafficking of weapons to and from separatist-controlled territories since the start of the war, and that it "really struggles" to stem the “heavy” flow.

But on both sides of the battle lines, weapons have a way of disappearing in Ukraine, where corruption remains rampant, an Ukrainian security official told Mashable in June.

“Weapons can disappear all the time,” possibly falling into the hands of extremist groups, said the official. “We have seen the black arms market flourish since the start of the war in Donbass,” the official said, using the colloquial term for eastern Ukraine.

Nearly 30,000 refugees have entered Croatia since Wednesday — many of whom are hungry, tired and in need of medical aid. Volunteers are working night and day to help, but the people waiting at various refugee centers and train stations, trying to find a way into western Europe, are desperate for information. They are trying to figure out routes to get to Germany, and with the borders to Slovenia and Hungary closing and reopening every few hours, that information is vital.

And without Internet access, they have none.

Desperate migrants were rescued from a sinking boat in the Mediterranean Sea by the crew of a cargo ship on May 3. New footage from the rescue shows the scramble to pull them to safety.

The clip of migrants packed onto a sinking rubber dinghy, clambering up ropes and a ladder onto a privately owned cargo ship that came to their aid between Libya and Sicily, highlights the growing plight of migrants making the dangerous journey to Europe.

An Indiana pizzeria netted over $840,000 through fundraising site GoFundMe in just three days after a widespread furor over its owners’ anti-gay comments to a local TV station prompted it to shut down.

They say they feel fear but you wouldn’t know it by watching them handle the explosives.

The members of this bomb squad — mostly Russian Cossacks — don’t use blast suits or special equipment. Instead they rely on steady hands, common household pliers and uncommon nerves of steel.

One wrong move means the difference between living and dying, says Denis “Raven” Zaitsev, the 31-year-old leader of the 19-man bomb-disposal team in Debaltseve that calls itself First Strike Company.

“It’s like dancing with death,” he says.

Since July, Ukrainian bomb disposal teams have removed more than 33,000 unexploded ordnance from the front lines.

Also in the van — more worryingly — are boxes of explosives, land mines and anti-tank mines as well as the anti-personnel bounding fragmentation mines that jump when tripped, exploding into a million lethal shards. There are grenades and blocks of C-4. Beneath our seat are two 155mm howitzer shells. All of it collected from Debaltseve.

“We disarm about 30 mines, explosives or booby traps every day,” Zaitsev says.

Now these things are rattling around the van’s floor as we bounce across the rocket-ravaged steppe en route to the former Ukrainian army camp to blow up all the ordnance.

That is, if we make it there, I think. We could be dead men, riding rickety Russian wheels.

Zaitsev sees my concern and tries to put me at ease, borrowing a quote from Tolstoy. “You can’t die twice, and you can’t avoid dying once,” he says.
