Protests, hunger strikes and no running water in Australian asylum detention camp on Manus Island – video
Video footage from detainees on Manus Island shows protests now under way in the Australian-funded and run detention centre on the island. The detainees are demanding their refugee claims be processed and are refusing to be settled in Papua New Guinea because they believe they will not be safe. After up to 18 months in detention, many protesters have asked to be handed over to the custody of the UN. Up to 500 are on hunger strike and Delta compound, where the protests have been fiercest, has been barricaded. In the compound, there is no running water and there has been no food or water delivered for more than 48 hours because of security concerns
