TV channel banned from airing report on Farmakonisi drownings, parties react

A Greek judge on Thursday banned a leading private TV station from airing an investigative report into a deadly migrant boat accident, claiming it could compromise the secrecy of the ongoing official investigation.

“We want justice. Please, don’t leave us alone.”

Survivors and relatives of the victims of the Farmakonisi shipwreck have asked us to publish their appeal and the pictures of their dead loved ones. On 20 January 2014, eight children and three women died when their vessel sank near the Greek island Farmakonisi while being towed by the Greek Coast Guard, in which seems to be a pushback operation in breach of international law.

The investigation into the case has now been closed. A court procedure will not take place. With this statement, the family members of the victims, including the surviving fathers and husbands, appeal to the European public. They are shocked that the investigation has been closed and demand clarification and justice for the dead.

“Amnesty International expresses its profound concerns over the loss of life of migrants and refugees including several small children near the island of Farmakonisi on 20 January 2014. In the early hours of Monday, 20 January 2014, a fishing boat carrying 28 migrants and refugees including many small children capsized and sank near the island of Farmakonisi. The group consisted of 25 Afghans including ten children aged between one and nine years old and three Syrians.”

Greece: Farmakonisi migrant tragedy - one year on and still no justice for victims

The Greek authorities’ failure to adequately investigate the deaths of 11 Afghans who drowned at sea shows a blatant disregard for justice for the victims and their families and exemplifies their hard-line approach towards asylum and migration, said Amnesty International on the anniversary of the Farmakonisi tragedy.

Analysis by PRO ASYL regarding the death of eleven refugees near the island of Farmakonisi

On 20 January 2015 a Greek lawyer’s team on behalf of the survivors filed a complaint against the Greek authorities to the European Court of Human Rights. Three woman and eight children from Afghanistan died one year ago when their vessel sank near the Greek island Farmakonisi while being towed by the Greek Coast Guard.
