L’ancien chef des inspecteurs de l’ONU en Irak Hans Blix, appelle la communauté internationale à ne pas répéter l’erreur en lançant une guerre contre l’Iran.
« Le monde a la mémoire courte. L’échec et les erreurs tragiques commises en Irak ne sont pas pris suffisamment au sérieux », déclare l’ancien diplomate suédois âgé de 82 ans à un groupe restreint de journalistes, dont celle de l’AFP, lors d’un passage à Dubaï.

Inside Syria : Aleppo’s Christians arm against Islamists

As evidence mounts that foreign Islamists are fighting alongside Syria’s increasingly radicalized rebels, Christians in Aleppo and elsewhere are taking up arms, often supplied by the regime.

“We saw what happened to the Christians in Iraq,” Abu George, a Christian resident of Aleppo’s Aziza district told GlobalPost. “What is going on in Aleppo is not a popular revolution for democracy and freedom. The fighters of the so-called Free Syrian Army are radical Sunnis who want to establish an Islamic state.”

While the 30-year-old shopkeeper said he had not received any direct threats from Syria’s Sunni Muslim rebels, he fears a repeat of Iraq’s sectarian bloodletting.

Since the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, the UN Human Rights Council estimates around half of Iraq’s 1.4 million Christians have fled the country, driven out by nearly a decade of church bombings, kidnappings and sectarian murder.

China wants in on the Arctic Council. And the council appears to be warming to the idea.

HONG KONG — As rising temperatures melt ice caps and uncover previously inaccessible natural resources and sea routes, the Arctic has caught the attention of countries near and far — not least the world’s second-biggest economic power, China.

At the center of the action is the Arctic Council, the most important intergovernmental organization in the region. Now, China is seeking to become a permanent observer.

But their opinions vary. The mother and daughters felt strongly that the rebels are to blame for the worst atrocities so far committed in Syria. The father blames both sides. And as for the son, he joined the revolution from the beginning and still participates regularly in protests.

An Iraqi mother of five living in San Diego, found severely beaten next to a threatening note saying “go back to your country,” died on Saturday.

Alawadi, 32, had been on life support since Wednesday when her teenage daughter found her unconscious in the living room of their home in El Cajon in San Diego County, according to news reports.

The Associated Press cited Hanif Mohebi of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), an organization that advocates for Muslim civil liberties, as saying she was taken off life support on Saturday.

“The family is in shock at the moment. They’re still trying to deal with what happened,” Mohebi said.

Alawadi’s daughter, Fatima Alhamidi told CNN affiliate KGTV that her mother had been beaten on the head repeatedly with a tire iron, and that the note had threatened the family to go back to Iraq and called them “terrorists.”

In 1989, 26-year-old Hungarian lawyer Viktor Orban gave a speech credited with firing up his countrymen to throw out their Communist dictators, leading to the revolution of that year.

Now, demonstrators are protesting Orban, “the Viktator,” as his opponents call the nationalist prime minister. He has become what he once most despised: an autocratic leader, they say.

Since the fall of Communism, Hungarian politicians have imposed laws restricting press freedoms and muting dissent. They have also been quick to order police to squash protests.

And for the most part, Hungarians backed down because Hungary, in the words of Austrian writer Paul Lendvai, has long been a democracy without democrats.
