Ou Bansky et Shepard Fairey apparaissent être totalement effarés par son succès (la fiche wikipédia rappelle que pendant un temps, on a pensé que Thierry Guetta était une grosse blague de Bansky, un personnage inventé par lui pour dénoncer les "travers du marché de l’art"...
Dans le Temps du 30 décembre 2010, on lit : "Comment être sûr qu’il ne fait pas partie de ce que la plupart des spécialistes estiment être un canular extrêmement élaboré pour dénoncer certaines dérives mercantiles du monde de l’art ?"

Ç’est vrai que le personnage est tellement "gros" que ça pourrait bien être un gros fake de Bansky, une opération monté par deux bons potes :) Mais apparemment pas. Reste que perso, je suis loin d’être convaincu par les oeuvres, et surtout - si tant est que ce ne soit pas un fake - par son approche marketing...
The legend of Mr. Brainwash, also known as Thierry Guetta and occasionally just MBW, is one of the most extraordinary in modern art. As a compulsive documentarian of his ever waking moment (30,000 hours of footage in 12 years), the French Los Angelean achieved overnight fame as the filmmaker-cum-unbelievably successful street artist in Banksy’s 2010 documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop. But from the start, critics have been suspicious of Guetta’s meteoric rise to success, lambasting his technical skill, his derivative style, and cliched subject matter. Some speculate that the Mr. Brainwash phenomenon is an elaborate prank, spearheaded by Banksy and meant to illustrate just how brainwashed the commercial art market really is.

Avec « Faites le mur ! » (Exit Through the Gift Shop), l’artiste de rue britannique Banksy propose un amusant film-graffiti qui pose quantité de questions pertinentes sur le vrai, le faux et le douteux en art (cinéma compris)
Connaissez-vous le « street art » ? Phénomène urbain, le graffiti est en passe de devenir aux arts plastiques ce que le rap/hip-hop est à la musique, et le film Faites le mur ! (Exit Through the Gift Shop) en propose un cours de rattrapage accéléré. Mais attention : un cours plutôt ludique en forme de gros point d’interrogation. Tout sauf un documentaire traditionnel, ce film signé Banksy – un Anglais issu de la scène underground de Bristol, devenu l’un des premiers à franchir les murs des salles de ventes et des musées d’art contemporain – pourrait en effet bien être un faux, autrement dit une fiction ! Ce qui n’ôte rien à son intérêt, au contraire.
Outre ses graffitis d’une qualité rare (politique, poétique et référentielle), qui ont fait le tour du monde grâce à Internet, la principale caractéristique de Banksy réside dans un anonymat jusqu’ici préservé. C’est dire si son rapport à l’image est complexe. Comment, dès lors, réaliser un film où il figure lui-même et réfléchit sur la place du mouvement auquel il appartient sur la scène artistique d’aujourd’hui ? Réponse : en prétendant avoir détourné le documentaire d’un autre. Comme naguère Orson Welles s’appropria du matériau filmé par François Reichenbach pour réaliser son fameux Vérités et mensonges (F for Fake, 1973)…

Mr. Brainwash is either a terrible artist or a great work of art. Whatever he is, he was apparently in lower Manhattan today, putting up an enormous, garish 9/11 mural on a department store across from the World Trade Center site.
Mr. Brainwash, for those who don’t follow the arcane world of street art, gained fame after appearing in Exit Through the Gift Shop, a 2010 film by the shadowy, astonishingly popular stencil artist Banksy. The film, ostensibly a documentary, follows Thierry Guetta, a talentless hanger-on who finds success and acclaim after christening himself Mr. Brainwash and leveraging his connections with big names like Banksy himself. The moral—that art, like any other industry, is largely about who you know and how much money you have—rings true. Almost too true, given Banksy’s well-documented art-market pranksterism.
