Malte Brandenburg says: “It’s an approach to the large post-war housing estates in Berlin.” These high-rise buildings are based on the idea of a rapid and inexpensive construction in order to provide a maximum number of residential opportunities.
They were built in form of massive tower blocks in a fairly identical style, but on closer inspection you will find a lot of variation. As already mentioned, these buildings were intended to provide modern and affordable housing for typical families of the middle class.
After the German reunification, there was a booming housing market and the people had other affordable alternatives. In addition, a demographic change occurred and people preferred the more charming renovations of older buildings or the middle class left to build their own houses in the suburbs.
