Libyan PM says Turkey supplying weapons to rival Tripoli group

Libya’s internationally recognized Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni said his government would stop dealing with Turkey because it was sending weapons to a rival group in Tripoli so that “the Libyan people kill each other”.

Two administrations, one in the capital and Thinni’s in the east, have been battling for power since the armed group Libya Dawn seized Tripoli in July and reinstated lawmakers from a previous assembly, four years after Muammar Gaddafi was ousted.

“Turkey is a state that is not dealing honestly with us. It’s exporting weapons to us so the Libyan people kill each other,” Thinni told Egyptian TV channel CBC late on Thursday.

The U.S. military has begun vetting a group of Syrian rebels eligible for training and assistance in the fight against Islamic State militants, a step that paves the way for training to begin in weeks, the Pentagon said on Friday.

Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said about 100 moderate Syrian rebels had been vetted to participate in the training and assistance effort, with no derogatory information uncovered to weigh against their involvement.

Kirby said 1,500 other potential candidates had been identified and were awaiting more rigorous screening before being admitted to the program.

Il y a quelque chose que je ne comprends pas : une fois qu’ils sont entraînés, ces 100 modérés, on en fait quoi ? On les expédie se faire rapidement trouer la paillasse au combat (parce que 100 types tout seuls, ça ne pèse quand même pas bien lourd), on les garde en stock jusqu’à ce qu’on en ait suffisamment des pareils, ou bien on les envoie rejoindre les bataillons de « rebelles pas du tout modérés » (auquel cas la notion de « modérés » se dilue assez rapidement ?

Western powers should take into consideration Russia’s legitimate security concerns over Ukraine, a top Chinese diplomat has said in an unusually frank and open display of support for Moscow’s position in the crisis.

Qu Xing, China’s ambassador to Belgium, was quoted by state news agency Xinhua late on Thursday as blaming competition between Russia and the West for the Ukraine crisis, urging Western powers to “abandon the zero-sum mentality” with Russia.

He said the “nature and root cause” of the crisis was the “game” between Russia and Western powers, including the United States and the European Union.
