Nos employés, ces gens qui mènent l’action humanitaire sont tués. Nos refuges sont surpeuplés », a-t-il encore dénoncé. « Nous ne sommes plus uniquement dans le domaine de l’action humanitaire. Nous sommes arrivés au point où il faut que des #comptes soient rendus », a réclamé Pierre Krähenbühl.

There were 468,000 homicides around the world in 2010. More than a third (36 per cent) of those are estimated to have occurred in Africa, 31 per cent in the Americas, 27 per cent in Asia, 5 per cent in Europe and 1 per cent in Oceania. The thing is, when broken down by population size, it turns out that The Americas and Africa have roughly the same homicide rates (between 16 and 17/100,000–which is roughly twice the global average of 6.9 homicides per 100,000 people). Those peaceful Europeans? About half the global average.

But the effect would be felt far beyond UNESCO. Several smaller UN agencies — including World Intellectual Property Organization, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the UN Conference on Trade and Development — tie their own membership to other UN agencies. This means that when one UN agency accepts a new member, these three UN agencies automatically accept the new member as well. Once UNESCO admits Palestine, these other UN agencies will automatically admit Palestine as well…and the United States will be forced to automatically pull out.

Most Americans probably have not heard of these agencies. But I know at least one American who has heard of the World Intellectual Property Organization: Beyonce Knowles. In 2010, Beyonce brought a complaint before WIPO alleging that an online perfume vendor using the domain name www.BeyonceFragrances.com was a “cyber-squatter” who is violating her trademark. She won the case.
