Crime mapping software could be used to help doctors determine how quickly cancer will spread, scientists have suggested.
Experts at the Institute of Cancer Research found that they can use an algorithm to map the location of immune cells in relation to tumour sites and predict how well they will fight off the disease.
Similar programmes are used by the Metropolitan Police to map crime hotspots to establish patterns of offending and try and work out where criminals live or may strike next.
The test, reported in the journal Modern Pathology, analysed tumour samples from 245 women with a type of breast cancer called oestrogen receptor negative, which is particularly hard to treat.
