"Gabi et moi avions de grands projets. Nous voulions faire un nouvel album de DAF. Nous pensions qu’il serait un mélange de nouveaux morceaux créés à la volée et d’une sélection de nos meilleurs joyaux cachés des années 80. Nous étions vraiment impatients de le faire. Nous étions certains que l’album était une affaire conclue.
Nous voulions terminer sa production cet été. J’ai réécouté tous nos vieux morceaux dénudés de l’époque - des trésors absolus !
Gabi a quitté cette vie soudainement, une vie qu’il aimait tant, et j’ai décidé de produire malgré tout tous ces joyaux inouïs pour DAF et Gabi. Ils ont été écrits alors que nous partagions un appartement sur Holland Road à Londres (1981/1982). Je dédie la chanson Ich denke an dich ("Je pense à toi") à Gabi".

Fin des années 70, alors que le mouvement kraut vire hippie-new age, une bande de punk rockers de Düsseldorf rebat les cartes du jeu : cuir, synthés et cheveux courts, D.A.F. est autant branché dancefloor qu’expérimentations fantastiques. Et si c’était ce groupe qui avait enterré le krautrock ? Réponse avec Robert Görl, interviewé à Paris en 2019, encore loin de savoir que Gabi Delgado, sa moitié, allait mourir un an plus tard, à 61 ans.

Gabi Delgado, the singer and lyricist of D.A.F., sadly and unexpectedly passed away. Gabi was a challenging performer and songwriter, always pushing the boundaries of acceptability in a positive and constructive way. He had a powerful vision of the future of music and youth culture, and the band has been – and continues to be – hugely influential in all forms of electronic and dance music. I’m very proud to have been able to work with Gabi and D.A.F., from Mute’s first ever album release in 1980, “Die Kleinen und die Bosen”, up until more recent years. Our sympathies go to Robert Görl, his partner in D.A.F. and to his family and closest ones.
