Jair Bolsonaro, a maintes fois minoré la pandémie de coronavirus. « Ce n’est pas une petite grippe qui va m’abattre », fanfaronnait même le dirigeant d’extrême droite à la mi-mars.

Je me disais justement la même chose hier au supermarché, ça m’avait frappé.

Notamment quand c’est dans le même couple, la femme avec un masque, et le type non. Et quand ils le portent, assez régulièrement, le nez en dehors du masque (les femmes qui portent le masque n’avaient, m’a-t-il semblé, jamais le nez dehors).

À la poissonnerie une des vendeuses a le nez dehors. Les mecs aussi. Ça m’a fait sourire à cause du meme nez = pénis mais du coup je ne mange plus de sushis.

C’est un trait assez classique que les femmes sont plus socialisées à obéir, prendre sur elles un truc désagréable, penser à l’impact de leur comportement sur d’autres. Quant aux hommes, ce sont avant tout leurs comportements comme celui-ci qui sont responsables de leur moindre espérance de vie : accident, suicide, conduite à risque en matière de bouffe, de drogue, de mode de vie.

Dans ces cas, il reste les règles strictes que devrait faire appliquer le supermarché (et qui devraient être aussi l’objet de la législation Covid). Les gens qui ne portent pas de masque ne se contentent pas de « faire ce qu’ils veulent, pas se protéger et assumer virilement d’être malades », il polluent l’air ambiant pour tout le monde car personne n’est « protégé » par le masque mais seulement par la capacité des autres à le mettre.

Donald Trump appeared without a protective mask on a visit to the carmaker Ford’s Michigan plan despite the company requiring visitors to wear them. ’I had one on before. I wore one in the back area. I didn’t want to give the press the pleasure of seeing it,’ he said.

Trump toured the Ford plant in Ypsilanti, which has been producing ventilators and personal protective equipment during the coronavirus outbreak. The president’s decision to not wear a mask drew the ire of Michigan’s state attorney general, Dana Nessel, after she had written to the White House saying it was the law in Michigan that everyone should wear a mask.

A new survey of 2,459 people living in the US has found that men are less likely to don face masks because they believe wearing one is “shameful,” “a sign of weakness,” and “not cool.”

The survey, conducted by American and British researchers, also found that men are less likely to believe they’ll be significantly impacted by Covid-19 than women. Which is ironic, because there is a huge amount of evidence showing that men are much more likely to die from coronavirus. Researchers are still trying to figure out whether this is due to biology or behaviour.

Interestingly, the study found gender differences in intentions to wear a face covering basically disappeared in places were masks were made mandatory. In other words: men need to be forced to wear masks more than women do. You’re obliged to wear face coverings whenever you can’t socially distance in New York, which explains why I didn’t notice any gender differences in my own study. So I won’t give up hope of a Nobel prize for science quite yet.

The fact that a significant number of men (including Donald Trump) think masks make them look weak is yet another reminder of how damaging gender stereotypes are.
