Le 10 juin à 19h à 20h30 heure de Paris : Webinaire "Combating a Virus : Militarism and Securitization Under Covid-19 - An online conversation on securitization and surveillance under COVID-19 in occupied Palestine and beyond", avec Dr. Nisha Kapoor (Assistant Professor of Sociology, Warwick University, UK) et Riya Al-Sanah (Who Profits’ Research Coordinator).

The global response to COVID-19 has been wrapped up in questions of militarism and surveillance, not only in rhetoric (“waging war on the virus”), but also in the heavy reliance of states on military logistics, policing and surveillance technologies. In the Israeli case, the present crisis opens a window into the ways the deep architecture of an expansionist security state is mobilized in response to changing epidemiological-cum-political realities.

What is the significance of securitization and surveillance in this present moment? What existing structures are being activated and drawn upon, what new ones are potentially emerging, and how are they circulating globally? And importantly, what’s the role of Israeli and international cooperation in all of this?

      https://www.ipsc.ie/podcast/palestine-podcast-38-john-dugard-virginia-tilley-on-israel-palestine-apartheid-

      Résumé en anglais :

Professor John Dugard described the close connection between apartheid and colonialism. The decolonisation process started by the UN in 1948 saw the rise to power of the Nationalist Party in South Africa, and the creation of a system of apartheid shaped by numerous discriminatory laws. The widescale protests were met with harsh repression.

In 1973 the UN GA voted for the Convention on the Crime of Apartheid. Apartheid was defined as a crime against humanity almost on the same level as genocide. The Convention did not confine itself to South Africa. However, there was no court to prosecute apartheid, this was left to national courts. Until today no national court has prosecuted anyone on the crime of apartheid, not even in South Africa itself. Only 112 states became a party to the Convention (Palestine since 2014), and South Africa is not among them.

In 1998 the Rome Statute created the ICC, and one of the crimes against humanity which it can prosecute is apartheid. The ICC, however, has no jurisdiction over crimes committed by Israel in Israel itself. But is does have jurisdiction on crimes committed within the occupied Palestinian territories, due to Palestine’s accession to the convention.

Professor Virginia Tilley explained how Israel’s ’s overriding mission has always been to become and remain a Jewish State. For this, it has created a legal system that, although functioning differently in each area it rules, operates as one regime to ensure domination over non-Jews. For example, Israel’s civil legislation has 50 laws discriminating against Palestinians; these laws have been extended into the occupied territories to provide Jewish settlers with control of Palestinian land while oppressing Palestinians. The system as a whole aims to maintain an overwhelming Jewish majority in Israel’s democracy. For example, Palestinian citizens of Israel have the right to vote, but restrictions on residence, Israel’s ban on the return of refugees and other laws prevent them from increasing their numbers beyond those of a “safely small” minority. For dealing with apartheid outside the oPt other avenues than the ICC could be explored, for example the UN Special Committee on Apartheid.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FvNxj36uMc

More than 150 filmmakers committed to queer and trans liberation have launched Queer Cinema for Palestine .

Responding to calls from Palestinian queers, the filmmakers pledged not to participate in TLVFest, the Israeli government-sponsored LGBT film festival, until Israel ends its oppression of Palestinians, queer and non queer alike. It’s an example of the growing awareness of our interconnected struggles for the liberation of all oppressed peoples and communities.

On the opening night of TLVFest, join us instead for a discussion with queer filmmakers on the importance of this pledge, how Israel’s far-right government uses LGBTQIA+ rights to pinkwash its violations of Palestinian rights and the role boycotts have played in liberation struggles.

Ghadir Shafie is the co-founder and director of Aswat – Palestinian Feminist Center for Sexual and Gender Freedoms. She is a feminist activist who dedicates her work and activism to advancing gender justice, advocating for sexual and gender freedoms, and promoting a greater understanding of—and commitment to—the issue of Palestine among global queers. Aswat organizes the Kooz Film Festival as part of its Art, Resistance and Social Change program.

Elle Flanders is a filmmaker and photographer based in Toronto. Raised in Canada and Israel, she has an education in Critical Theory and Visual Arts and is an alumnus of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. Flanders’ work has been screened and exhibited throughout the world.

He is the recipient of the 2000 Toronto Arts Award for film/video and the 2007 Bell Award in Video Art. Through this conference, we will invite three young Palestinians who are daily confronted by many reasons to reject the Israeli occupation. For all of them, there is no option but resistance. What kind of commitment do they have? Thus, we will firstly talk about how occupation affects their life and secondly, how they are resisting in their daily life.

In January 2020, Hanson Israel submitted a request to the Central Planning Bureau of the Israeli Civil Administration (ICA), within the Ministry of Defense, to amend the existing quarry plans (No 52/14/1) in order to expand the area of the Nahal Rabba Quarry. Several civil society actors and residents of the affected Palestinian communities from Al-Zawiya, Rafat, and Deir Balut submitted objections to those plans, and will be presented during the aforementioned hearing.

Critically, the settlements are illegal under international law, and the involvement of business in the settlement enterprise, including through an Israeli subsidiary, may “have, directly and indirectly, enabled, facilitated and profited from the construction and growth of the settlements”.i It is crucial to hold national businesses operating in illegal settlements in the OPT accountable and to facilitate compensation for affected Palestinian communities whose rights to movement, property, livelihood, and family have been severely violated due to such illegal operations and activities.
