The Music Of Your Life

Dedicated to the pioneering women who made music during the late 1980’s 1990’s. And the bands of today they inspired Maybe some didn’t want to be called #Riot_Grrrls but along side those who did, they changed the landscape for women and girls and their influence is still felt today.
Cheesecake- Boston Riot Grrrl band live in 1991.
Denise Monahan vocals and Tess Basilio guitar formed Cheescake in early 1991. They were co workers at an Art Museom in Boston who bonded over L7 . “Shove” was a life changer for both of them . After Seeing the Lunachicks live they got their equipment and their shit together. They brought in Caitlin Bermingham on bass, Lara on rhythm guitar and Coleen on drums. The second show they ever played was the first Riot Grrrl convention in Washington DC in August 1992. They appear in the documentary “Not Bad For a Girl.” They also had a song on the second Stars Kill Rock compilation. They were the only riot Grrrl band in Boston and played live often opening for many touring bands like Slant 6, Tribe 8, and the Lunachicks among others. The band also played NYC and Washington DC regularly where riot grrrl was thriving. In 1994 Denise left Cheescake and formed Milkmoney. Cheescake continued as a four piece and released a CD “You’re Soaking in it “ . Their run was short but powerful and they are proud to be original riot grrls who helped start the revolution.

How The Manikins Became The Biggest Band in Perth, Australia
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/features/the-manikins-feature
The history of rock music is littered with bands who didn’t make it. There are the ephemeral experiments that burned up like flash paper; influential acts remembered only by genre die-hards; and provincial projects that never left home. And then there are bands like The Manikins , a Perth punk outfit that existed for a handful of years in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, who fall into all three of those categories.

From the same scene that begat the Scientists and the Victims came Perth, Australia’s The Manikins. Founded by Neil Fernandes — a former member of the legendary Cheap Nasties with future Scientists member Kim Salmon — the Manikins bridged the rawness of their Aussie punk contemporaries with melodic Power Pop. From Broadway to Blazes features all the bands’ essential recordings from 1971 to 1981, including the three criminally rare and outrageously expensive self-released 7" singles (Models for Mankind, Premonition and Love at Second Sight), their DiY cassette and more unreleased studio recordings as well as detailed liner notes by Fernandes. Manufactured Recordings presents one of the final, untold stories of the original Australian Punk and New Wave scene.

Scene Report : Stoner Rock in Greece | Bandcamp Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/scene-report/stoner-rock-in-greece-list
In the summer of 2015, several hundred stoner rock artists and fans travelled to a small festival by a lake in the northern part of Greece. And though that turned out to be the Fuzztastic Planet Festival’s final year—so far, anyway—the scene’s pulse has hardly diminished. In 2016, fans headed to the Los Almiros Festival to watch their local heroes share the stage with international acts like Truckfighters.
Heavy music has been popular in Greece for decades. In the ’90s, underground black metal bands like Athens’ Rotting Christ responded to the Nordic dominance in the genre with albums that included themes from ancient Greece. In the panic and slump that followed Greece’s economic crash in 2010, scores of young people fled the country. For some of those who chose to stay, fuzzed-out rock provides an escape from the daily routine. Radio stations like Downtuned, the self-described home of the Greek heavy underground, have become a beacon of the scene, spreading the word across the globe.
Needless to say, stoner rock has very little in common with traditional Greek music—don’t expect bouzouki, Cretan lute, or Epirus clarinet here, though a handful of bands, like Villagers of Ioannina City, have managed to merge the two sounds successfully. Most of them, though, including bands like Nightstalker and Planet of Zeus, keep the focus simple: guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. If you’re a fan of groups like Kyuss or Turbonegro, there are plenty of interesting things happening in Greece to warrant your attention.

How South Africa’s Blue Notes Helped Invent European Free Jazz | Bandcamp Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/lists/blue-notes-south-african-jazz-guide
In July of 1964, the members of the Cape Town-based band Blue Notes boarded a plane, headed for a gig at the world famous Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins, France. They were all leaving South Africa for the first time; most of them would never return. At the time, critics and audiences considered them the best jazz band in the country, but because the sextet was multi-racial they were hounded by the Apartheid state which made it illegal for its members to gather—much less perform—as a group. With passports secured, the escape to Antibes wasn’t just a career opportunity, it was an asylum from the institutionalized, racist nightmare of their homeland. For the history of improvised music, and for free jazz which came to embody the sound of global Black liberation, it also became much more. The legend that the Blue Notes would forge in Europe over the next quarter century—both as an ensemble and as individual players—constitutes one of the most under-appreciated legacies in jazz.

Ten Groups to Know From the Ascendant Psych and Garage Scene of Northern Mexico | Bandcamp Daily
▻https://daily.bandcamp.com/scene-report/sonoran-desert-psych-list
It’s a frigid November evening on the outskirts of Hermosillo when grunge quintet Margaritas Podridas finally hit the Posadelic stage to dole out their signature cocktail of mosh-inducing riffs and earthshaking wails. The raging group was one of the buzzier hometown acts on the 2019 Posadelic lineup—a festival, now in its fourth year, that has become a lightning rod for new garage, punk, and psych rock across the state of Sonora in Northern Mexico. While Margaritas Podridas’ loud, distorted guitar filled the chilly desert air, a quick survey of the crowd revealed an international cast of musicians from bands like Mesquite, Hooveriii, El Shirota and La Bruja de Texcoco, all mingling and kicking back ahead of their own thrilling sets.

However diverse today’s scene, traditional metal signifiers prevail: think long beards, album sleeves brandished with Dungeons & Dragons-inspired artwork, lyrical marijuana worship. Here are some Polish acts who live on the intersection of these differing musical styles, bound together by cosmic vibes, hedonistic mischief, and the almighty riff.
