The Hague-based ICC is currently investigating whether US forces committed war crimes in Afghanistan.
The US has criticised the court since its foundation and is one of a dozen states which have not signed up.

President Donald Trump issued an executive order in June, which allows the US to block the assets of ICC employees and stop them entering the country.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Mr Pompeo said Ms Bensouda and Phakiso Mochochoko, the head of the Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division, were to be sanctioned under this order.
Dismissing the ICC as a “thoroughly broken and corrupted institution”, he said those who continued to “materially support those individuals risk exposure to sanctions as well”.

« Tout individu ou entité qui continuera à assister matériellement » la procureure « s’expose également à des sanctions », a déclaré le chef de la #diplomatie [sic] américaine Mike Pompeo lors d’une conférence de presse.
Déjà engagé dans une offensive sans précédent contre la CPI, le président américain Donald Trump avait autorisé en juin des sanctions économiques contre ses responsables pour dissuader la juridiction de poursuivre des militaires américains pour leur implication dans le conflit en Afghanistan.
La CPI avait alors déploré « une série d’attaques sans précédent » à son encontre, soulignant son indépendance.
« Aujourd’hui nous passons de la parole aux actes », a expliqué Mike Pompeo, « car la #CPI continue malheureusement de viser des Américains ».
La Cour, qui siège à La Haye, aux Pays-Bas, a décidé en appel en mars d’autoriser l’ouverture d’une enquête pour #crimes de #guerre et crimes contre l’humanité en Afghanistan malgré l’opposition de l’administration Trump.

The court is made up of legal professionals who have dedicated their professional lives in pursuit of justice for victims and survivors of some of the most horrific crimes, including crimes against humanity. They should be commended for their commitment, not subjected to a punitive campaign of intimidation. Grotesquely, the White House’s actions may dissuade survivors of human rights abuses from demanding justice, and create a chilling effect on those who would support their efforts.”
