At a time when Palestinians in Gaza are facing horrific conditions, the U.S. should not be vetoing a UN resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of all hostages. Mr. Sanders, who is Jewish and spent time on a kibbutz as a young man, called for a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in 2021 after 11 days of fighting in Gaza. He has refrained from doing so in the current conflict, arguing that Hamas cannot be trusted to abide by a cease-fire and to relinquish control of Gaza.
Hamas has made it “absolutely clear, before and after Oct. 7, that their goal is the destruction of Israel and perpetual warfare to achieve that end,” Mr. Sanders said in his statement to The Times.
Mr. Shakir said the Hamas attack was personally “jarring” for Mr. Sanders, whose father’s family was killed in the Holocaust.
“As a deeply committed, progressive person that Bernie is, he finds it impossible to advocate for trusting a decidedly unprogressive Hamas,” Mr. Shakir said.

Bernie Sanders rejects additional military aid for Israel
In a letter to Biden, the progressive senator slammed Israel’s “immoral” military approach to Gaza.
Sanders highlighted the human toll of the war, including the mass displacement, mounting deaths and “indiscriminate” bombing. “This constitutes not just a humanitarian cataclysm, but a mass atrocity,” the Jewish senator wrote.
“And it is being done with bombs and equipment produced and provided by the United States and heavily subsidized by American taxpayers. Tragically, we are complicit in this carnage.”
Biden is seeking more than $10bn in additional military aid to Israel, but Sanders called on him to withdraw that request. “This money would allow for the continuation of the Netanyahu government’s widespread, indiscriminate bombardment,” he said.
He also called on the Biden administration to back UN efforts to secure “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire”.
The senator, who ran for president in 2016 and 2020, has repeatedly asserted that there can be no ceasefire with Hamas, drawing the ire of many of his former staffers and supporters who have been advocating an end to the war.
“The only humanitarian ceasefire is a permanent ceasefire. It’s for the people, both innocent Palestinian and Israeli people,” Nusaiba Mubarak, who previously worked on Sanders’s outreach efforts to Arab and Muslim voters during the 2020 campaign, told Al Jazeera.

On his TV show “The 700 Club,” aired on Monday, Robertson posed the question to Rabbi Daniel Lapin, a conservative leader. “What is it about Jewish people that make them prosper financially?”
According to a report in Salon, Lapin explained that Jewish people don’t spend their weekends mowing lawns or fixing their cars because they prefer to pay others to do it for them. Robertson reportedly said that Jews were polishing diamonds on their weekends instead of doing handiwork.
