The Australian state of Tasmania has recorded its largest-ever stranding of whales, after more were found beached during a large rescue effort.
Since Monday, an estimated 470 pilot whales have been discovered stranded on Tasmania’s west coast.
Most of the 200 whales in the newly discovered group appeared to have died, officials said on Wednesday.
They said rescuers were racing to save any animals still alive in shallow waters.
Although 25 whales from the first group were freed on Tuesday, some had beached themselves again after being brought in by the tide, according to officials.

Australia whales: 90 dead in mass stranding off Tasmania - BBC News
▻https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-54244499
At least a third of 270 whales stranded off Tasmania have died and more are feared to be dying, rescuers in Australia say.
The mass stranding on the west coast of the island was discovered on Monday.
Marine biologists are scrambling to save the remaining pilot whales in a tricky operation likely to take days.
It’s unknown what drew the whales to the shore. Whale beachings are common in the region, but one of this size has not been seen in over a decade.
Tasmania last recorded a mass stranding in 2009 involving around 200 whales.

Marine rescue teams are rushing to save a pod of pilot whales stranded off the coast of Tasmania in a multi-day operation, with up to a third of the 270 mammals likely already dead.
Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s west coast is known to be a hotspot for the marooning of marine animals, but this event is believed to be the worst in more than a decade, with the pod of hundreds of whales scattered across two sandbars and one beach.
