As a Moroccan-born French-Swiss photojournalist focusing on global themes that sought to document conflict and celebrate beauty ranging from May ’68 in Paris and Solidarność in Poland to China, India, Burma and Korea, Bruno Barbey ranked among the best alongside Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Steve McCurry, Cindy Sherman, Sebastao Salgado, David Burnett, Catherine Leroy, Don McCullin, Marc Riboud… His death on 9 November, 2020 at the age of 79 has left a poignant gap. We have asked some of his friends and former colleagues to comment on this exceptional “recorder of disappearing history and life” as Barbey, a long-time member of the renowned Magnum photo agency, once phrased it.
