He was the eighth casualty in recent months from the village of Beita

The car lurched from side to side as it ascended the rough dirt road, the wind swirling and howling around it. Israel Defense Forces bulldozers have already started to block this road, but it’s still navigable. When we stopped at the top of the hill, the car was rocking and the doors could barely be opened against the powerful blustery wind. Indeed, this week’s winter storm, dubbed Carmel, also pounded the remote hill the Palestinians call Huti, a rise of olive trees that is across from Mount Sabih, which, to their outrage, is the site of the settler outpost Evyatar. A few hundred meters separate the two hills – between the torn Israeli flag hoisted as a provocation on what the locals call “Jabal al-Sabih” amid the settlers’ buildings, and the flag of Palestine that residents of the village of Beita also hoisted as a provocation, across the way. Two flags tattered by the wind, one opposite the other. The outsize Hanukkah menorah planted by the encroaching settlers is still in place, along with the row of trailer homes and watchtowers.

The soil on the Huti hilltop is saturated with the blood of Palestinian demonstrators, and scorched and sooty from the tires the protesters set ablaze here every Friday. Seven residents of the nearby village of Beita and one from the neighboring village of Yatma have been killed here by Israel Defense Forces soldiers in the seven months that have passed since the longtime activist-settler Daniella Weiss and her friends reestablished Evyatar in May. The site was once an IDF outpost called Tapuhit, built on Beita’s land. Afterward, in 2013, the original outpost of Evyatar was established there without authorization; it was subsequently evacuated and demolished. Today the structures erected by the settlers of the new Evyatar remain in place – the outpost is uninhabited at present, except for some army troops that are guarding there – and the blood continues to be shed.

The last time we came here was in September, to tell the story of the killing of another demonstrator from Beita, Muhammad Khabisa, 28, the father of an 8-month-old daughter. Before that we were here in August, to tell the story of the killing of Imad Duikat, 37, father of a 2-month-old daughter. In July, we were here because of the killing of Shadi Shurafi, a village plumber, who was fixing the valve on a water main out near the highway when he was shot to death by IDF troops. And in June, we visited the neighboring village of Yatma, to tell the story of the killing, during the same series of ongoing demonstrations, of Tareq Snobar, 41, who was a father for just two days of his life before being killed. When he was shot by Israeli soldiers using live fire from about 100 meters away, he was on the way to the hospital to pick up his wife and their newborn son, Omar, to bring them home. He never got there.

That is not the whole roster of those killed in the Evyatar demonstrations. On Friday, December 10, there was an eighth fatality: Jamil Abu Ayyash, a 31-year-old carpenter from Beita, married, no children.

We drove this week with two of Jamil’s brothers, Ayyash, 43, and Rami, 41, to see the place where their brother was cut down. At first they were apprehensive about making the trip, for fear of the army. A few days earlier, when they had driven there with a field researcher for a Palestinian human rights organization, two army jeeps suddenly appeared and blocked their way; the soldiers ordered them to leave.

“Do you have protection for me?” Ayyash asked us and Abdulkarim Sadi, a field researcher for the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, who was accompanying us. “We are trying now to avoid trouble, so that we can go on working in Israel,” Rami said. Finally the brothers, both still in mourning, summoned up the courage to go. They showed us where the soldiers had stood and where their brother had been on the hilltop, according to what they were told. Jamil had just gotten to the demonstration when he was shot in the head.

The soldiers and their victim were a few hundred meters apart. The bullet penetrated Jamil’s forehead, created a narrow entry wound and exited from the back of his neck, creating a much more serious wound – a sign the bullet had exploded inside and decimated his brain. And yet he was still breathing when he was evacuated by an ambulance, which rushed him to Rafadiya Hospital in Nablus. At the time, his brother Ayyash, who lives in one of the last houses in the village, near the road leading up to the site of the demonstrations, was in his backyard, washing his car, together with his 2-year-old daughter, Sarah. The little girl, he relates, becomes upset at the wailing of sirens and they both got worried by the sight of the ambulance racing down the hill – and then someone in the vehicle gestured to him to follow them fast. Leaving Sarah behind, he sped in his car to Rafadiya, where he learned that the man who was dying of injuries in the ambulance was his brother Jamil. Another brother, Rami, in the nearby village of Huwara at the time, was summoned urgently to the hospital in Nablus. He also informed their parents, and they joined their sons.

A boy is doing his homework on a table in the yard of his family’s home, in the biting cold. The house is at the edge of Beita, which lies south of Nablus. Jamal Abu Ayyash, the bereaved father, a 67-year-old farmer, is sitting in a corner of a room, his face grim, wearing a coat, a wool hat and several layers of clothes. In honor of the guests they turn on the small electric heater, which does little to stave off the cold. We very rarely see Palestinian homes with any heating systems. The bereaved mother, Hadara, 66, is wrapped in black, her face etched with agony. The couple had two daughters and four sons – until Jamil’s death. Ala, newly widowed, is not here.

Jamil, a carpenter, worked in a large furniture-making workshop at the foot of the hill on which he was killed. Because he was the only one of the brothers who didn’t work in Israel, he went more often to the Friday demonstrations, while his brothers weren’t always in the village. But Jamil, too, wasn’t a regular at the demonstrations. The village’s previous fatal casualty, Muhammad Khabisa, was a member of the same hamula (clan), the Khabisa clan, but the two victims didn’t known each other.

Jamal Abu Ayyash owns 20 dunams (5 acres) of farmland on the hill where Evyatar stands. The land was expropriated in the early 1980s for the establishment of the Tapuhit outpost, never to be returned, of course. From where we are now standing across the way, the brothers show us the spot on Jabal al-Sabih where their property is.

On what would be the last day of his life, Jamil got up relatively late and went downstairs to his parents’ ground-floor apartment, as he did every morning. He then went into the village center to buy hummus and ful for breakfast, and at midday attended prayers in the mosque. He didn’t tell his parents that he intended to proceed to the demonstration, but taking part in the Friday protests is almost routine for most of the villagers.

It was after 3 P.M. when Jamil was shot. Eyewitnesses told his family that he was standing on an elevated rock face, which made him an easy target for the soldiers. His wife, Ala, learned that he had been wounded on Facebook; the brothers and parents waited for news at the hospital. The efforts to revive Jamil went on until around 5 P.M., and then the physicians informed the family of his death. He was buried in the village cemetery that same evening.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit initially denied – on the day of the incident – that the soldiers had used live fire and it made do with the generic announcement: “The claim about a Palestinian who was killed is known.”

This week the spokesperson’s unit gave this response to a query from Haaretz: “On December 10, 2021, a violent disturbance took place adjacent to Evyatar Hill with the participation of hundreds of Palestinians who threw stones and rolled burning tires toward IDF and Border Police forces. Due to the event, a Military Police investigation was launched; upon its conclusion, its findings will be forwarded to the military prosecution. Understandably, no details can be provided about an investigation in progress.”

This past Sunday, the bereaved brother Rami arrived for work on the construction of the light rail in Ramat Gan. He left home at 3 A.M., as usual, and arrived at 6, only to hear from the Druze foreman that he had been fired. Just like that, with no explanation. He told us he has no idea whether this has anything to do with the death of his brother. He asked no questions and returned home, mortified.

On the way back from the hill where Jamil was killed, during our visit on Monday, as we drove down the dirt road toward the village, two young people, their faces unmasked, sprang out from behind the olive trees, a few meters away. One of them picked up a rock and aimed it at us. He was apparently intending to hurl it at our car, with its Israeli plates, from point-blank range. Then at the last minute he and his friend noticed the two bereaved brothers with us in the car – the pair rushed out of the vehicle to stop them. The rock fell to the ground and the youth smiled in embarrassment.

We were told that they were from the “Guards of the Hill,” an activist group established by young people in Beita.

As we drove away, we spied a pile of dozens of used tires, waiting by the roadside for the next demonstration.

Israeli forces, on Monday, returned to the Islamic al-Yousofiyya Cemetery to resume razing the historic grave site in the occupied city of Jerusalem, a local Palestinian official reported.

Head of the Committee for the Preservation of Islamic Cemeteries in Jerusalem, Mustafa Abu Zahra, told Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) that Israeli municipal crews from the ‘Nature Protection Authority’ levelled parts of the historic site, located near the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.

The Wadi Hilweh Information Center in Silwan (Silwanic) reported that Israeli police detained a Palestinian young man, identified as Omar Al-Rashed from the cemetery while he was sitting at his grandfather’s grave site.

Officers attempted to remove a grieving mother from the grave site of her son, to which she responded, “Bury me next to my son, I will not leave here.”

The occupation authorities plan to destroy the cemetery and build a national biblical park, south of the old city of Jerusalem, with no regard or respect for the families of those buried at the site.

Just two weeks ago, Israeli municipal officers desecrated the historic cemetery, unearthing the remains of Palestinians buried at the site, causing distress among family members of the dead.

In November of 2020 the staircase leading to the site was demolished, and in December municipal crews demolished the wall of the Shuhada cemetery, which is an extension of the al-Yousifiyya Graveyard.

Israeli forces targeted, shot and killed the former political prisoner Midhat Saleh al-Saleh while he was on his way home in the Golan Heights on Saturday.

Al-Saleh was the head of the Office of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights affairs in the Syrian Cabinet.

He was returning home to Ein al-Tina town, near the Israeli-occupied town of Majdal Shams, according to a report by the Syrian news agency Sana.

Al-Saleh survived numerous attempts by the Israeli military to assassinate him. In 2011, the Israeli military fired several times at his home while he was in it. Al-Saleh always said that the assassination attempts merely increased his determination to stay near Majdal Shams and maintain his steadfastness to remain on his land.

The Syrian Cabinet issued a statement condemning the extrajudicial assassination by Israeli forces, who were within Syrian territory when they carried out the assassination – constituting an act of war against Syria.

In their statement, the Syrian cabinet stressed that such terrorist acts will only increase the determination of the Syrian Arab people to continue resisting the occupier and liberating the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.

The statement condemned the Israeli military for their “cowardly criminal act”, affirming that it is not unusual for the “criminal Israeli occupation” to target the Syrians living in Golan Heights.

“The cabinet offers its deepest and sincerest condolences to the Syrian people and to the family and relatives of the martyr, asking God to have mercy upon him ” the statement said. (...)

Israeli Ynet news quoted that army claiming that the soldiers reportedly observed, through surveillance cameras, three Palestinians approaching the fence, and added that “one of them was digging in the ground while carrying a suspicious bag.”

It said that the army did not provide further clarification besides stating that the soldiers spotted the man and opened fire at him.

His family said that Mohammad was a married father of eight children, and worked at the local town council, and added that he took a four-day vacation from work to hunt for birds and spend time with the family.(...)

Comme des milliers de gens, j’ai suivi leur histoire sur les médias sociaux où la campagne #SaveBeita (préservez Beita) a attiré de plus en plus de monde et a entretenu un soutien massif aux Défenseurs de la montagne à Beita.

Mohammed el-Kurd, 15 septembre 2021 sur The Nation

Beita, Palestine — L’horloge indique presque 22 heures.

Palestinian medical sources have confirmed, on Friday evening, that the seriously injured young man, who was shot by Israeli soldiers in Beita town, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus, has died from his wounds.

The sources said the young man, identified as Mohammad Ali Khabisa, 28, from Beita town, was shot with a live round in the head, in Sbeih Mountain, and was rushed to the an-Najah Hospital, in Nablus, but succumbed to his very serious injuries.

The slain young man is a married father of an infant girl, only eights months of age, and is the eighth to be killed in Sbeih Mountain since the protests started 140 days ago after illegal Israeli colonizers installed an outpost on private Palestinian lands.

It is worth mentioning that, two weeks ago, the soldiers shot the young man with a rubber-coated steel bullet in the head.

During Friday protests, the soldiers also injured 29 Palestinians, including eight who were shot with rubber-coated steel bullets, 18 who suffered the effects of tear gas inhalation, and two who suffered burns.

Beita has been witnessing constant protests, and repeated Israeli military invasions and violations since the illegal Israeli colonizers occupied the top of Sbeih Mountain and installed an outpost they named “Avitar.”

  • Recently Released Cancer-Stricken Detainee Dies At Hospital In Ramallah
    Sep 23, 2021

    – – IMEMC News
    https://imemc.org/article/recently-released-cancer-stricken-detainee-dies-at-hospital-in-ramallah

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) has confirmed, Wednesday, that a cancer-stricken former Palestinian political prisoner who was recently released from an Israeli prison after his condition seriously deteriorated, has died at a Palestinian hospital in Ramallah, in central West Bank.

The PPS stated that the detainee, Hussein Masalma, 39, from the al-Khader town, south of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank, was released from an Israeli prison in February of this year when his condition became extremely serious after he was denied the right to receive the urgently-needed specialized medical treatment for his Leukemia.

The PPS added that the detainee was first moved to Hadassah Israeli medical center, before being sent, a week ago, to the Istishari Arab Hospital in Ramallah.

The PPS held Israel fully responsible for his death, especially since he was subject to medical neglect while in prison, and only started receiving treatment when his condition became serious.

It is worth mentioning that Masalma started suffering from complications and sharp pain in late 2020, and it took Israel more than a month to send him to the clinic of the Negev Desert detention camp and was only moved to an Israeli hospital when his condition became very serious, and the physicians found out that he has End-Stage Leukemia.

The Palestinian was abducted by the Israel army in the year 2002 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He spent 19 years in prison before he was released due to his serious medical condition.

His release came after various appeals, deliberations, and delays by Israeli courts before his lawyer filed an appeal with the Israeli High Court.

The last two of the six Palestinian political prisoners who escaped last week from Gilboa Prison were captured Saturday in Eastern Neighborhood in Jenin city, in the northern part of the West Bank.

The father stated that the soldiers frequently invaded his homes and the homes of many relatives since his son was able to escape from Gilboa’ prison, and added that he was also repeatedly interrogated at the nearby Salem military base.

The two detainees had remained at large for nearly two weeks after escaping with four other prisoners from Gilboa Prison in northern Israel.

Chase for six Gilboa Prison escapees draws to a close, amid reports of clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in Jenin

Israeli security forces apprehended the last two of the six Palestinian high-security prisoners who escaped from Gilboa Prison about two weeks ago overnight Saturday in the northern West Bank city of Jenin.

The other four escapees were apprehended last week. All six hail from the Jenin area. During and after the arrests, Palestinians clashsed with Israeli forces.

According to the Israel Police, Kamamji and Infiat hid together in a house in Jenin over the past several days. After the Shin Bet security service received intelligence on their location a few hours earlier, Israeli special police forces and soldiers surrounded the building where the two were said to be hiding. Kamamji and Infiat emerged from the building unarmed and surrendered without resisting arrest, the Israeli military said in a statement. They have since been taken in for questioning. Two Palestinians suspected of aiding and abetting the fugitives’ escape were arrested along with them.

The news of Iham Kamamji and Monadel Infiat’s capture came amid clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in the city. The Israeli military said that riots broke out throughout the area as forces left the city, in which rocks and improvised explosives were hurled and Palestinians fired at troops. The Israeli military was concerned that gunmen would emerge from Jenin’s refugee camp when forces arrived; troops were sent to the area in order to prevent upheaval.

Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai said that as time went on, the police knew that the two were in Jenin, and had been preparing for a complex operation for several days. He noted that after the intelligence they were waiting on came in overnight Saturday, commanders gave the green light, and forces moved in.

Police believe that the two did not split up after their escape, and crossed into the West Bank together on Friday. This contradicts previous assessments that Infiat was believed to be in the Jenin area for a week, via a breach in the separation barrier used by Palestinians who enter Israel illegally, and that Kamamji entered the city over the past two days.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett praised security forces for the operation, which he called “impressive, sophisticated and speedy.”

“I want to thank the security forces who worked night and day, including on Shabbat and holidays, in order to bring this incident to a close,” he said. Regarding the jailbreak, he added, “What went wrong can be fixed.”

Public Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev said that while all the fugitives have been apprehended, he will be requesting a government commission of inquiry into the jailbreak. “I want to thank the Israel Police, IDF troops and the Shin Bet who helped complete the chase, from beginning to end,” he said. He added, “The hunt ended successfully, but the mission is not yet over; we must ensure that an event like this does not repeat itself in the future.”

He will propose the commission of inquiry to the cabinet for its approval in the coming days, he said, “in order to examine the circumstances that brought this escape to pass.”

      Confusion in Jenin

A local medical source said that three Palestinians were wounded by live fire in the clashes during and after the arrest, and that they were taken to the city’s hospital in moderate and stable condition.

Immediately after news of the arrests broke, groups of Palestinians held solidarity rallies outside prisons. Hamas released a statement saying that “the capture of the two prisoners does not affect the morale and determination of the Palestinians to free the prisoners, and to turn the issue of prisoners into a strategic one that is a main priority.”

The Gaza Prisoner’s Association released an initial statement saying that the capture of the six escapees does not negate the importance of their jailbreak. Islamic Jihad in Jenin has yet to comment on the reports.

Jenin residents said that the arrests took them by surprise, even though there were signs that military activity was escalating in the area. Most of it was concentrated in the city’s refugee camp, residents said, and they did not expect the fugitives to be hiding in a neighborhood in the city’s east.

“One of the many nagging questions was, if the two already got to Jenin, why didn’t they come to the refugee camp, which just a few minutes’ drive away and is considered much safer for them,” said a family member of one of the prisoners.

Kamamji’s father Fuad told the Arabic-language Israeli radio station Al-Shams that he received an unexpected, seconds-long phone call from Iham shortly before 2 A.M. “He said that he decided to turn himself in in order to protect the building’s residents – I was completely surprised that he was in Jenin, and I thought that he already got to Gaza or Lebanon two weeks ago. But it’s his decision and I respect it.”

Earlier on Saturday, Israeli forces searched for the two prisoners in the nearby towns of Kafr Dan, Javed and Burqin.

      The escape plan

Zakaria Zubeidi, the only prisoner not affiliated with Islamic Jihad to take part in the escape, had his detention extended by another 10 days on Sunday. Mahmoud Aradeh’s detention was also extended.

Zubeidi’s lawyer, Avigdor Feldman, said that the Fatah prisoner had been aware of the tunnel about a month before the jailbreak, and that he himself had joined in the plan two days earlier, and requested to change cells.

He was surprised to find that the other prisoners did not have an escape plan, and expected that they would be helped by locals. Arab residents of the north did not aid the prisoners, who found themselves eating from trees and drinking from spigots.

Zubeidi wanted to escape to Jenin, but the other prisoners said they were too tired to climb to the other side of Mount Gilboa. They wanted to wait until nightfall, and one of them said that they would have access to a car if they could get their hands on a telephone. This is why they went to a mosque in the village of Na’ura, where the people did not let them make a call. This is why they decided to split up into groups.

According to Zubeidi, the Shin Bet claim that the six were planning on carrying out a terror attack is false. Feldman said that Zubeidi was beaten by IDF soldiers during his arrest.

The apprehended inmates told their lawyers that Infiat carried out most of the digging from the Gilboa Prison cell, due to his physical size. The prisoners had outside help. Mahmoud Aradeh planned the jailbreak, and his cousin Mohammed was the first through the escape tunnel, the prisoners said. Digging began on December 14, and the prisoners broke free on September 5. They had planned to escape two days later, but feared that guards would notice the sand from digging the tunnel, and decided to bring the date forward.

Four more prisoners were found on Sunday to have helped the escapees dig the tunnel. All of them are affiliated with Islamic Jihad, and were kept in that cell last year. They admitted to helping them dig, and one said during questioning that he served as a lookout to make sure there were no guards coming to check on them. According to those prisoners, guards came to check the cell a number of times while one of them was digging, but they made excuses to cover for the absence of the missing inmate.

Last week, Haaretz reported that Israeli investigators had discovered that a prisoner who was due to join the prison break backed out at the last moment, and was apparently replaced by Kamamji.

The reluctant prisoner is said to have made the decision just hours before prison cells at the facility were locked for the night. The group plotting the escape then approached other inmates to take his place. It appears that Kamamji, who until the eve of the breakout had been living in another cell and, like a prominent member of the group, Zakaria Zubeidi, had joined the others in their cell just prior to the breakout.
