In this manuscript, we point out that the federal government headed by President Bolsonaro has pursued a political agenda that contributed to the spread of COVID-19, transforming the country into a major repository for SARS-CoV-2 and its variants, thus representing a risk for worldwide containment efforts. Furthermore his actions are also weakening democratic institutions, which could counter his political agenda, effectively facilitating the spread of COVID-19. Thus, the perpetuation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil is due to human behaviour factors, especially high-level public decision makers.

As schools reopen around the world, their role as vectors for the spread of the novel coronavirus is becoming increasingly clear, with growing numbers of children infected and dying.

In the United States, after schools reopened, the first week of September registered a 240 percent increase in cases in children compared to the end of July. In the last two months, 164 children died from COVID-19 in the US, an average of almost three deaths per day.

In Brazil, children and young people up to the age of 19 accounted for 2.5 percent of cases and 0.6 percent of COVID-19 deaths in December 2020. At the end of August of this year, one month after the largest school reopenings since the pandemic began, these numbers increased to 17 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively. Brazil has recorded the deaths of 2,398 children and young people up to the age of 19 from COVID-19, the highest number in the world.

On 5 August 2021, Brazil passed 559,607 deaths officially attributed to COVID-19, with drastic increases in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in many municipalities (counties) and state capitals [1]. The number of deaths is underestimated and may be up to twice that reported in official data [2]. Since 3 March 2021 Brazil’s daily deaths per million inhabitants have surpassed those in the US. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has downplayed the severity of the disease [3], promoted an “early treatment” package of remedies that are known to be ineffective [3, 4] and acted to block measures for inhibiting transmission [5].❞

    Robert Stevens

Since the fall of Kabul to the Taliban on August 15, governments internationally have engaged in non-stop handwringing over the fate of tens of thousands of refugees desperate to flee the country. These are the same governments whose wars over the last three decades, including in Afghanistan, have turned tens of millions of people into refugees and destroyed entire societies.

20 years of war, with the imperialist military forces only finally departing this month, have left 550,000 internally displaced in Afghanistan since the beginning of this year, adding to the almost 3 million Afghans who had met this fate by the end of 2020.

For all the crocodile tears shed over those who worked with the occupation now seeking to flee, Europe’s governments, since the fall of the Taliban, have refused to take more than a few thousand refugees.

  • Jackson Browne still asking questions on Downhill from Everywhere- World Socialist Web Site

    https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2021/08/10/brow-a10.html

Singer-songwriter and rock musician Jackson Browne released his fifteenth studio album Downhill from Everywhere on July 23.

Over the past five decades, Browne has carved out an identity as a craftsman of songs that alternate between introspective and political lyrics combined with attractive melodies and driving rock rhythms. While he has to some extent specialized in acoustic ballads, Browne’s most popular songs have always exhibited powerful and energetic hooks on which he hangs his musical hat.

In the songs on the new album—all of them written before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic—the 72-year-old Browne continues along these lines. For listeners who know his back catalog, Downhill from Everywhere moves around in familiar territory; for those new to Jackson Browne, there is more than enough accessible music and straightforward language here to gather and hold the interest of listeners.

This week marks the centenary of the Tulsa, Oklahoma race massacre, one of the deadliest and most destructive antiblack pogroms in the history of the United States.

Officials confirmed 39 deaths—26 black and 13 white people—but it is estimated that the true toll could be as high as 300, with many African American victims uncounted and buried in mass graves. An Oklahoma state commission estimated in 2001 that the present day cost of the damage was $30 million.

Documentary exposes Spain’s role in illegal occupation of Western Sahara - World Socialist Web Site

    https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2021/04/30/ocup-a30.html

Ocupación S.A. is a documentary film that investigates how the Spanish ruling elite helps perpetuate Morocco’s little-reported, decades-long and illegal occupation of Spain’s resource-rich but impoverished former North African colony, Western Sahara. Inevitably bound up with that is the repression of the region’s Sahrawi inhabitants.

  • Biden launches barbaric attack on immigrants
    https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2021/03/16/immi-m16.html

Perhaps even worse than the conditions imposed by the Biden administration on the children and youth that it has allowed to enter the country is its decision to summarily expel all arriving adult immigrants and those children crossing with relatives on the grounds that they pose a health risk due to the coronavirus.

In a late January letter to the Biden administration, dozens of medical experts explained that such “Title 42” expulsions serve no medical purpose: “Imposing restrictions on asylum seekers and other migrants based on immigration status is discriminatory and has no scientific basis as a public health measure.” Title 42 abolishes due process, ends the right to apply for asylum or other relief, and denies immigrants the right to appear for a hearing before expulsion. Seventy percent of the over 100,000 people who attempted to cross the border in February, including thousands of children, were expelled in this manner.

Those immigrants deported under Title 42 are sent back across the border after US authorities strip them of their possessions, including their shoelaces, leaving them to shuffle across bridges into Mexico. Many are flown hundreds of miles away from where they crossed, to be expelled at a different point along the border. Thousands presently find themselves homeless or detained along the US-Mexico border where the pandemic is spreading unabated.
