Human rights, freedom, and the right of nations to self-determination are fundamental values of European citizens.
The Latvian Classical Beehive is located in Zedelgem, Belgium, but symbolically it is part of Latvia, part of its history and lifestyle.
My idea was to unite in this monument the common European values and symbol language understood by all Europeans with something special and visually characteristic only to Latvia.
The Latvian bee colony in Belgium.
The bee colony is a nation.
The hive is their state with its own army, law and order.
Bees are peaceful.
They sting only when they feel threatened.
They defend, fight and die for their hive, colony and FREEDOM.
Beekeepers all over the world use different types of hives, but the Latvian classical design hive exists only in Latvia. We can be proud that we have our own unique beehive design. The confirmed specifications have remained unchanged since they were designed in 1925. The monument is cast with these exact proportions and material structure.
A significant component of the monument is SOUND – the humming of bees.
The choir of bee wing vibrations recorded in the Latvian countryside attests to the vitality, populace and longevity of the colony. There were 12 000 Latvian soldiers in the Zedelgem camp. This is equivalent to the number of bees in a hive.
Material for the monument – bronze casting with a green patina, gold plated bees on a brushed stainless steel base. At night, lighting from within the object illuminates the entrance to the hive.
